Economic Commentary

The US economy has added jobs at a steady pace this year, but GDP growth has been surprisingly subdued.  Current forecasts indicate the economy is likely to expand less than 2% this year, well below more robust earlier predications.

Consumer spending, always the dominate component in GDP, has been the bright spot.  Business investment, however, has been weak with diminished capital spending in the energy and technology sectors.  Otherwise, soft export sales and a slower pace of government spending complete the picture of a solid, but uninspiring, economic landscape.

Outside the US, economic performance is generally even more subdued despite extraordinarily accommodative monetary policies by major central banks.  Massive quantitative easing programs and negative interest rates in some countries make historically low US rates attractive by comparison and sustain a strong dollar.

Apart from the usual geopolitical risks, such as the Brexit vote, and uncertainty around the US presidential election, there is little to suggest the economic trajectory will change, positively or negatively, in the near to intermediate term.  The current economic expansion is exceedingly long by historic standards and while multiple catalysts for its repeal lurk offstage, none appear ready to move center stage.  Expect more of the same.  While this is the new normal, we find many business owners and managers have been adept at navigating through it. Their businesses are lean, profitable, and well positioned for new opportunity.
