SEPTEMBER 27 - NATIONAL CHOCOLATE MILK DAY - NATIONAL CRUSH A CAN DAY - NATIONAL CORNED BEEF HASH DAY - NATIONAL WOMAN ROAD WARRIOR DAY - NATIONAL VOTER REGISTRATION DAY

National Chocolate Milk Day September 27
NATIONAL CHOCOLATE MILK DAY
Across the country, folks enjoy a tall, frosty glass on National Chocolate Milk Day which is observed annually on September 27.
Invented by Hans Sloane in the late 1680s, today chocolate milk can be purchased premixed or it can be made at home with either cocoa powder and a sweetener or with melted chocolate, chocolate syrup or chocolate milk mix.
While Sloane was in Jamaica, he encountered a beverage the locals drank made with cocoa mixed with water. After trying it, he reported the flavor to be nauseating.  After some experimentation, Sloane found a way to mix the cocoa with milk to make it more pleasant tasting. He brought the chocolate recipe back with him upon his return to England.  Now people enjoy this delicious drink every day.
HOW TO OBSERVE
Mix up some chocolate milk to drink and use #ChocolateMilkDay to post on social media.

NATIONAL CRUSH A CAN DAY
National Crush a Can Day is observed annually on September 27.  This day was created to help educate people about the benefits of recycling.

Interesting Facts:

  • In America, 105,800 cans are recycled every minute.
  • Recycling aluminum saves 95% of the energy it would have taken to process the same amount from a virgin source.
  • Your television can run for 3 hours from the energy saved by recycling one can.
  • Aluminum cans are worth about a penny each.
  • The industry pays more than $1 billion annually for recycled cans.

National Corned Beef Hash Day September 27
NATIONAL CORNED BEEF HASH DAY
National Corned Beef Hash Day is observed annually on September 27.
Making corned beef hash is a great way to use up leftovers. Corned beef hash became popular during and after World War II as rationing limited the availability of fresh meat.
The Hormel Company claims it introduced corned beef hash and roast beef hash to the United States as early as 1950. However, "hash" of many forms has been part of the American diet since at least the 19th century, as is attested to by the availability of numerous recipes and the existence of many "hash houses" named after the dish.

 Sweet Corn Soup with Crab
Fresh crab and local corn make the basis for this soup recipe. It's certain to be a crowd-pleaser.
Ingredients
  • 2 tablespoons extra-virgin olive oil, divided
  • 1 Vidalia onion, chopped
  • 5 cups fresh corn kernels
  • 3/8 teaspoon kosher salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon black pepper
  • 2 cups water
  • 1/3 cup half-and-half
  • 1/3 cup frozen peas, thawed
  • 1/4 cup fresh basil leaves
  • 1 pound jumbo lump crabmeat, drained and shell pieces removed
Directions
Heat a Dutch oven over medium-high heat. Add 1 tablespoon oil; swirl to coat. Add onion; sauté 3 minutes. Add corn, salt, and pepper; sauté 3 minutes. Add 2 cups water; bring to a boil. Reduce heat; simmer 6 minutes. Place corn mixture and half-and-half in a blender. Remove center piece of blender lid (to allow steam to escape); secure blender lid on blender. Place a towel over opening in blender lid (to avoid splatters). Blend until smooth.
Place peas in a small bowl; mash slightly with a fork. Stir in remaining 1 tablespoon oil, basil, and crab; serve over soup.

LECTURE: Bernini's Rome

Many of the memorable sights a tourist sees in Rome were created by one man, Gian Lorenzo Bernini. Presented by Tom Cortazzo, this lecture features a virtual walking tour through the Eternal City to see many of Bernini's breathtaking and inspiring creations, from his spellbinding sculpture David, to his Fountain of the Four Rivers in Piazza Navona and his grand colonnade in front of St. Peter's Square. Hear about this prodigy who grew to command commissions from popes, fell from grace in the world of architecture and staged a triumphal return to be recognized as the undisputed father of the Baroque style and leading sculptor of his age.
The lecture is free for AICC Members and students with a valid university or high school ID. For non-members, the suggested donation is $10.

Taste of Louisiana: Creole-Italian Lunch Demonstration
  •
  • Southern Food & Beverage Museum1504 Oretha Castle Haley Boulevard New Orleans, LA, 70113 United States
Southern Food & Beverage Museum Founder and President, Liz Williams, is a New Orleans native with Sicilian roots. As a young girl, Liz learned not only the Sicilian culinary traditions, but the Creole twist on Sicilian food, now known as Creole Italian.
Join Liz and SoFAB's Director of Culinary Programming, Jyl Benson, every Thursday from 11 AM to 1 PM in the state-of-the-art Rouses Culinary Innovation Center by Jenn-Air for their new Creole Italian lunch demonstration and cooking class. The demonstration class offers an in-depth look into how to create delicious Creole Italian dishes that can be found nowhere else in the world, along with their cultural and historical traditions.
We provide the authentic recipes for you to take home, but in class we'll show you how to "cheat' and make them a little easier. Not only will you enjoy the lunch cooked right in front of you, but you'll also learn the fascinating history of the Sicilian people in New Orleans. Fun fact: At one time there were more Sicilians in New Orleans than in any other place (other than Palermo)!
The atmosphere for the class is relaxed, fun, and friendly, and guests are encouraged to seek advice on cooking, dining, and local interests from Liz and Jyl.
The $40 menu includes:
  • Italian Olive Salad with Fresh Lemon and Provolone
  • Creole Red Gravy with Sweet Italian Sausage and Pasta
  • Made to Order Snoballs
  • Garlic Bread
  • Iced Tea
Admission and a guided private tour of the Southern Food & Beverage Museum led by Liz Williams is included in the ticket price. If you have special dietary needs or questions, please contact Jyl Benson ( [email protected]) directly at least 48 hours in advance.
Please purchase your tickets at least 48 hours in advance so we can prepare for the correct number of attendees. Within 48 hours, please call the museum at 504-569-0405 to see if there is any room in the class for additional attendees. There is a discount for SoFAB Members.
Please choose the date you would like to attend below. Polo Club Lounge at Windsor Court Reopens After Summer Expansion
$300K refurbishment offers additional seating, extended performance area and new menu

NEW ORLEANS -  Windsor Court Hotel will unveil its newest expansion on Friday, W When it reopens Polo Club Lounge after two months of restoration and expansion. Reminiscent of the private clubs of England, the rich, soft furnishings and dark woods will remain the same, but the addition of approximately 930 square feet will allow for more seating and an increase in performance space.
"We are excited to welcome guests back into Polo Club Lounge. It's the same, stylish venue that our regulars have always loved, but the refurbishment adds new elements to enhance the customer experience," said Windsor Court Director of Food and Beverage Joey Worley.
To complement the aesthetic revamp, a new menu created by The Grill Room Chef de Cuisine Gabriel Charpentier will boast an array of elevated pub fare. Small plate selections include Steak Tartare, a Crab and Crawfish Croquette and Bibb Salad, while larger offerings include Fish & Chips, the Windsor Burger Royale and a Crab Cake Po'Boy. The menu also features two varieties of Caviar, as well as shared selections of a Cheese Plate, Charcuterie and Oxtail Ragout Poutine, among others.
A popular venue for local jazz performers, the Polo Club Lounge's newly expanded wing, which boasts all new sound and lighting equipment, is the perfect backdrop for musical mainstay Robin Barnes. As the headliner on Friday and Saturday nights, she captivates audiences with her scintillating voice and melodic grace. Known as the Songbird of New Orleans, Barnes recently made the Billboard charts with her new album, "Songbird Sessions," which landed at No. 5 for Current Traditional Jazz Albums.
Other enhancements in Polo Club Lounge include new barstools and drapes, a refurbished bar top, and the addition of outlets along the bar so guests can charge their phones.
Windsor Court continues to welcome guests to Cocktail Bar, where Head Mixologist Kent Westmoreland wows locals and tourists alike with his twist on classic cocktails and where renowned jazz vocalist Anais St. John takes to the stage every Friday and Saturday evening.

Since their crowd pleasing, sold out hit show Under The Boardwalk here at Rivertown Theaters, patrons continually request that we bring back The Buddies. "The Boys" will again be joined by the dazzling "Big Easy Babes" with their nod to the girl groups and diva anthems of the '50's and '60's. The great American Radio Songbook comes to life in a rollicking musical event that promises all the spectacle, excitement and extraordinary talent our audiences have come to expect. The Times Picayune says, "The non-stop energy the quartet brings to the stage is positively infectious and makes the show a treat not just for those audience members who heard this music originally on jukeboxes at the malt shops. It is a night for the entire family to enjoy."  Let The Good Times Roll will have audiences smiling and singing along, proving that retro never sounded so new!

Thanks for the Memories: Bob Hope and His All-Star Pacific Tour Weekends, September 23 - October 2
Friday and Saturday: 6:00 p.m. Dinner Seating, 8:00 p.m. Showtime
Sunday: 11:00 a.m. Brunch Seating, 1:00 p.m. Showtime
Back by popular demand is this tribute to the incredible shows and stars Bob Hope took to war-zone islands during World War II. A cast of 13 re-creates Judy Garland, The Andrews Sisters, Deanna Durbin, Carmen Miranda, Frances Langford, and Bob himself, along with our Victory Swing band. Just imagine how thrilled our troops were when these stars performed such favorites as Boogie Woogie Bugle Boy, In the Mood, I'll Be Seeing You, Somewhere Over the Rainbow, and, of course, Thanks for the Memories.

How about some legs with your eggs?! Join us for Sunday brunch with a kick. World-famous burlesque dancer  Bella Blue  performs to live music while you dine on three creative Creole courses by Chef Juan Carlos Gonzalez. New Orleans has a long history with burlesque dancing. • The first ever Beignet Fest will be held Oct. 8 in Lafayette Square.

Just when you thought the city couldn't possibly dedicate a festival to yet another indigenous food item, a local nonprofit has announced the lineup for the first-everBeignet Fest this fall.

The festival - which aims to raise funds for children with autism - takes place October 8 at Lafayette Square and will feature both sweet and savory versions of the iconic fried dough confection from local restaurants.

Local couple Amy and Sherwood Collins hatched the idea for the festival to donate proceeds to the Tres Doux Foundation, which they founded to help raise awareness and funds for autism programs in New Orleans.

"Through our journey with our son, Liam, who is on the autism spectrum, we found out there's a gap in accessible programming for kids on the spectrum, and we wanted to change that,"Amy Collins said in a prepared statement. "So, we are doing what we do best - creating and managing a festival with amazing food and music!"

The list for food vendors so far includes - of course - Café Du Monde, Ye Olde College Inn, The Ruby Slipper, Café Beignet, New Orleans Coffee & Beignet and Bread & Circus, of Lafayette. Curiously. Morning Call doesn't appear to have joined the lineup just yet.

While the festival is free and open to the public, apportion of the proceeds from food and beverage sales will go toward the foundation. Guests will be able to cast their vote for a favorite in several categories including best sweet, savory, most original and all around crowd favorite.

The musical lineup includes Big Sam's Funky Nation, John "Papa" Gros Band, Los Po-Boy-Citos, The Confetti Park Players Children's Chorus and
Alexandra Scott.

Hammer has a Bachelor's degree in German literature from Reed College in Portland, Oregon, and a Master's degree in Historic Preservation from Tulane University School of Architecture. He works closely with The Collection's significant holdings relating to the history of the German community in New Orleans. He created an online research pathfinder to these materials, available at  www. hnoc.org  and has published and presented numerous papers about 19th and 20th Century German New Orleans, and the German community organizations whose records are preserved at The Collection.

7 p.m., Monday, Nov. 21, 2016

Sal Serio, curator of the American Italian Research Center at the East Bank Regional Library in Metairie, will discuss "The USS Rich: Algiers Naval Station to the D-Day Invasion at Normandy." The U.S.S. Rich (DE-695) was a Buckley-class destroyer escort, the first United States Navy ship named in honor of Lieutenant (j.g.) Ralph M. Rich (1916-1942) who was awarded the Navy Cross for his leadership as a fighter pilot off Enterprise during the Battle of Midway. The ship was sunk off Utah Beach during the Allied Invasion of France in 1944.

The Genealogical Research Society of New Orleans was established in 1960 to foster an interest in family research and to encourage preservation of genealogical records in New Orleans, and in Louisiana and the Gulf Coast south. Since January, 1962 the Society has published a quarterly, New Orleans Genesis, which is available to its members.
