How to Prevent the Spread of Head Lice
Did you know that head lice infestations most commonly occur in preschool children attending child care and in children attending elementary school. (CDC). Learn the signs and symptoms of head lice, how to check for head lice , and how to prevent the spread of lice.
Check for signs and symptoms by asking these questions:
Are you itching?
Does it feel like something is moving around in your head?
Check for red bumps on their neck, head, and shoulders.
Learn How to Identify Nits:
Adult Lice begin as nits and are usually found in the hair behind the ears or on the back of the neck. When searching, you can see nits with the naked eye. Ask yourself these questions when looking for nits.
Do I see nits on the hair behind the ears or on the back of the neck?
Are they oval shaped?
Can I easily remove them? (Does it fall like lint or dandruff?)
Learn What Adult Lice Look Like and How they Function:
Adult lice can are often compared to the size of a sesame seed and have six claw like legs. Ask your self this question when looking for lice:
When I wash, condition, and part my child's hair (with a detection comb), can I see nits or something moving in my child's scalp?
Practice Prevention & Hygiene:
If you suspect you child has lice:
Do not send them to school or to their child care facility.
Consult a medical professional especially if there has been an outbreak at the child care center or school.
Be sure to ask your child care provider and school about their lice policy;
Remember ! The best ways to prevent the spread of head lice are to avoid sharing personal items and to avoid head to head contact.
