Chamber Welcomes Back a Familiar Face

The Odessa Chamber of Commerce has welcomed back a familiar face, Wesley Burnett, as the new director of Economic Development.

Prior to rejoining the Chamber, Burnett served as the director of Andrews' economic development corporation. Before that, Wesley held a position with the Odessa Chamber of Commerce for nearly 7 years, serving as the director of business retention and expansion, a role that is now filled by various staff positions. Chamber CEO Renee Earls said officials recruited Burnett after 10 individuals applied for this position.

"He has done a really nice job for them in economic development," said Earls. "You can see how the city has really grown over there."

Burnett will replace previous director of Economic Development, Scott Jones, who resigned in May. With Burnett taking over leadership, he sees advantages that include nearby interstates and railways in a larger city, with a bigger team at the economic development department to help.

Congratulations Wesley, we are thrilled to have you back!
Chamber Hosts SBA Procurement Seminar

On August 25, 2016 our new President/CEO Renee Earls at the Odessa Chamber of Commerce entered into a Strategic Alliance Memorandum (SAM) with the U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA).The objective of SAM is to work with the SBA to recruit and certify small businesses in the district, specifically to the contracting needs of our federal partners.

The SBA, in conjunction with the Odessa Chamber of Commerce, will vet and screen small businesses within Odessa that are interested in doing business with the federal government. In addition, the Odessa Chamber of Commerce will assist in identifying smaller, disadvantaged businesses for specific 8 (a) programs. These programs are designed to assist the businesses, and gain a foothold in government contracting.

To qualify, the small business must be owned and at least 51% controlled by a socially and economically disadvantaged individual. These individuals must be of of good character, as well as a U.S. citizen that exhibits potential for success.  Though it was not necessary to enter into an agreement with the Procurement Assistance Center, the Chamber did host a group of  small businesses  to learn  directly from a PAC
representative on how they may eligible to bid on State contracts. (www.nwtsbdc.org)

This is the second group that the Odessa Chamber of Commerce has hosted this year.  PAC is a part of the Regional Business Development Partnership of Texas Tech University and consist of six small business development center offices in North West Texas. They are a nonprofit, nationwide network who provide training and technical assistance on government contracting to area businesses.
