Featured Review

In a mid-19th century small Irish town, an English nurse is hired to watch a young girl who by all accounts hasn't eaten in months. A miracle. The nurse is determined to expose the hoax and go home. Events do not unfold as she expects. Much of this novel involves this former Nightingale sitting in a chair watching a charming and intelligent girl lie in her bed. While reading this thrilling novel about faith, hope and hardship, I too sat in a chair but on the edge of it.

Lindorff has a great knack, the poet's knack, for writing well with clarity while remaining true to some alluring mystery that requires deeper thought on the part of the reader. I admire his way of describing people, places, and events. They really do take on an otherworldly quality yet are rooted in the here and now or the there and then.
- Tom Cowan, author of  Fire in the Head and Yearning for the Wind.

Each month Northshire Bookstore's award-winning booksellers will select the perfect book and send it to your friend, loved one or yourself!

Each book will arrive beautifully wrapped with a gift card.

At a recent celebration of our 40th anniversary, where invited guests included publishers, sales reps, authors, and staff members, Chris gave a moving and very personal speech about what bookselling and the book world has come to mean to him.  Here is a particularly poignant excerpt:

"When Marilynne Robinson was named winner of the Dayton Literary Peace Prize, she commented: "I have had the privilege of seeing for myself how books live in the world, how readily they can cross all sorts of borders and boundaries, how important they are in sustaining a human conversation through and despite the frictions that arise among nations, how intensely they can be taken to heart anywhere. It is certainly appropriate that a literary prize should also be a peace prize, and that writers themselves should be made aware of their unique opportunity..., an opportunity created by the interest and quality and commitment to truth of the literary work of generations."
There is something special about being involved in an art form that spans centuries and that has been essential to the flourishing of cultures, to the expansion of minds and to the spotlighting of the sacred in everyday life.
A few months ago, during the worst of the racial tensions and violence, we put up a Black Lives Matter display in the window along Broadway in Saratoga. A Professor from the University of Albany came into the store and asked to speak to our manager Nancy about the display. She told us she had sent photos of the display out to all her friends and family; that she was deeply moved and that she felt supported and hopeful during a week of despair. She still keeps the image on her cell phone. This is just one small example of the power of books, booksellers, bookstores and taking a moment to pause and connect with our fellow human beings - that is how I define sacred.
Wendell Berry said that, "There are no unsacred places; there are only sacred places and desecrated places." In large measure, what we are trying to do here is to create and sustain a sacred situation - not just a place, but an organism that lives and, in its own small way, breathes life into the beings who wander in. As people experience the somewhat obscene desecration that are strip malls or the quiet desecration of isolation or the insidious desecration of the homogenization of the country, they appreciate more and more the spaces and people they encounter that are genuine and uplifted.  And  that turns them on to great books..."

Ed and I feel blessed that Chris is the keeper of the flame that started 40 years ago.

Best,
Barbara
