Let's Explore Books

To Kill a Mockingbird
By Harper Lee

To Kill a Mockingbird is a gripping, heart-wrenching, and wholly remarkable tale of coming-of-age in a South poisoned by virulent prejudice. It shows a world of great beauty and savage inequities through the eyes of a young girl, as her father, a crusading local lawyer, risks everything to defend a black man unjustly accused of a terrible crime.

Join us at Kenneth Hahn Park to make "Snack Packs" for the children at the Los Angeles Ronald McDonald House! Families staying at the Ronald McDonald House are dealing with serious childhood illnesses and face financial hardships as they are spending all of their time focusing on their children's medical issues. They spend long days at the Children's Hospital for appointments and treatments. Let's help them out by providing some snacks and cheer for their hospital days.

We will meet at the dragon playground at the top of Kenneth Hahn Park to decorate paper snack bags, make encouraging cards, and fill the bags with healthy snacks.

Donations of healthy snacks and drinks are needed! Suggestions are non-perishable juice or milk boxes/pouches, granola bars, nut/trail mix packs, fruit snacks, apple sauce pouches, other fruit pouches, or crackers/chips. Please bring pre-packaged single serving snacks that don't expire until 2017 or later. If you're unable to donate snacks but would like to attend to decorate bags and make cards, you're still welcome to join us!

If you have learners in both age groups, you can decide which age group fits your family best. The trip is $30/person. Learners may use funds, while other family members must pay through Eventbrite. We will be meeting at Tewinkle Park located at 970 Arlington Drive in Costa Mesa.  At 10:00 am, we will meet at the picnic shelter next to the playground to drop off the donated toys. After you drop off your toys, please walk around the beautiful park and help pick up trash. Once you have contributed to the trash clean up, please feel free to picnic at the beautiful park while socializing and enjoying a fun hangout time with other iLEAD families.

Learner Spotlight - Conor Kelly
Conor Kelly is a fifth grade iLEAD learner with a passion for soccer! He has played soccer for the past six years and his position is center defense. He enjoys the sport because it's active and keeps him moving. When asked what advice Conor would give someone playing soccer for the first time, he said, "You should always focus on what you need to do and not what is happening around you. You should be prepared when the ball comes to you."
iLEAD 360° OC
iLEAD 360° OC's fifth through eighth grade learners spent last week at Catalina Island Marine Institute (CIMI) in Toyon Bay to participate in a variety of hands-on marine biology labs and field activities. Together they enjoyed discovering marine life, astronomy and island ecology as they hiked, snorkeled, kayaked and ventured around the island.

High School -- Taking the PSAT
Is your learner planning on going directly to a four-year college or university after high school? If so, sophomores (or juniors who have not yet taken the PSAT) will want to register to take the PSAT test at their local high school to prepare for the regular SAT exam that juniors and seniors take in the spring.

To register at your local public high school as a homeschool learner for the PSAT/NMSQT, please contact the counseling office at your local school to learn their dates and how to register. It will cost approximately $15 to take the test. The school testing dates will either be October 15, 19 or November 2, so please contact them right away to register and be included on their testing list.

On the day of the test, there will be a bubble on the scantron specifically for homeschool learners to mark.  For more information, please visit the College Board website .  Testing results will be accessible through the personal account you need to create here.
