Message From PTSA President, David Doud

Dear International School Students and Families,

As your PTSA President and Board, we look forward to seeing you at Back to Business Day Wednesday August 17th.

We encourage you to "Beat the Line" and sign-up for your PTSA membership online before Back to Business Day.  Although we will have membership registration forms available at our PTSA table where we will be greeting you with coffee and baked goods, signing up online makes it easier for all. You can join ISPTSA online here or visit http://isptsa.org  and click JOIN. Please make sure to update your personal information as this information will be used for the 2016-17 directory!

We have three PTSA goals this year: 1.) get every family engaged, 2.) improve our communications infrastructure, and 3.) connect IS families and students to our dynamic local tech economy.  As you can see from the chart below, your membership and donations help support a wide variety of needs throughout our school community.

As committed volunteers, we value your support and participation.  We look forward to meeting you Wednesday, and joining hand in hand to make this the best year possible.  Please contact me if you have any questions.  See you Wednesday.

best./David Doud

We hope it will be your home for joining the ISPTSA, volunteering, signing up for the Messenger weekly newsletter and keeping current on what is happening at the school.
Please take a moment to:
1) Create an ISPTSA account or update your current information. We will be using this for directory information. We will also have an online directory which will be available to ISPTSA members.
2) Join the ISPTSA, just click on the link that says Join.
3) Sign up for the Monday Messenger weekly e-newsletter, this is the best way to get the most current information on what is happening at school.
4) Volunteer - There are lots of ways to volunteer, both from home and at school. Parent involvement in creating and staffing programs such as Reflections, Staff Appreciation, Grade level representatives, awarding grants and editing the website is what makes IS unique.
5) Donate - Your donations to the PTSA allows us to invest, approximately $100,000 a year toward the school's mission of academic excellence through a broad spectrum of curriculum extension grants, programs, clubs, and community building.

School News
Back to Business Day: Wed. 8/17

At Back to Business day your student will get their schedule, PE lock, be assigned a locker, receive an ORCA card to ride the Metro Bus (if eligible), have their photo taken, and pay fees.  Complete details for Back to Business Day including grade check in times, forms, and details can be found here.  Please remember there will not be copies of the forms available at school during back to business day, so please print them out in advance and bring the completed copies with you.

You can pay for nearly all things online before Back to Business Day and cut down on time standing in line.  If you don't mind the lines, you may pay in the main office or at the attendance window. We now take credit cards, checks and cash!  We can only do one transaction per student so you will need at least one check per student to pay for class fees.

The school office is now open from 9-2 daily except for a planned closure on Thurs. 8/18.

Volunteers Still Needed
The school needs parent volunteers to please signup to help with prep and laptop handout August 17, and August 23.

Retreat Chaperone Volunteers Desperately Needed! Please Join Us!

We still need 12 male chaperones and 6 female chaperones.

We will have to cancel the event if we cannot fill these spots!

The trip is only possible with your support! Our greatest need is for cabin chaperones; we need 12 male and 12 female chaperones to stay in cabins with students. We need some of those chaperones to ride to camp and back on buses and to chaperone during the Thursday afternoon sessions, Friday morning meetings, meals and evening events. We recognize that some parents can be available overnight but may need to drive separately after work or late in the afternoon. If you are able to chaperone please let us know the following:
  • If you can ride the bus and stay for the entire retreat or will need to drive separately
  • If you are coming separately, what time will you plan to arrive and to leave Camp Schechter (approximately)
  •  Your cell phone number
  •  Best email address to reach you
Alternately, you can sign up at the following here.

Please consider volunteering for this valuable student experience!
Thank you!

Retreat Information
The International School holds an annual retreat for our high school students in order to build community and realize its mission of providing students with a globally focused education.

High school students (grades 9-12) will come to school the morning of Thursday, September 8th and will be bussed to Camp Solomon Schechter, near Olympia, WA. They will spend the night there and will return by bus the following day, Friday, September 9th by 2:30 pm.

At this point the late registration fee is $85. The fee for the retreat has been added to your student's account online so you may pay online or at school on Back to Business Day, August 17th.

Titan Robotics Club is Looking for Adult FIRST Lego League Coaches

Titan Robotics Club is looking for adult coaches to help run our FIRST Lego League program for middle school students. We ideally are looking for at least 3 adults to help run our teams with the assistance of a team of high school mentors that will know all the material and technology required. Adults are to help with keeping students on task, coordinating the meeting, program development and coaching the team(much like any other team sport). While you are encouraged to learn the technology, you do not have to become an expert, the high school students are there for that. We have previously run our program on Wednesday afternoons but are considering moving it to evenings or weekends in order to involve a team of adult volunteers. It is an approximately a 2-3 hour a week commitment from middle of September until typically the middle of December, possibly middle of January if a team qualifies for the State Championship. If you are interested in becoming a coach please contact Amy McIvor at amy@titanrobotics.net and include your availability. We are looking to build a team of adults that would like to build a competitive program and can not run this program without adults. If you have any questions please let us know.
