Partnerships, education improving water quality
Agriculture is under the microscope more than ever before with concerns over nutrient loss and its impact on water quality. A panel of four addressed those issues at a Verdesian Life Sciences-hosted event.
 
Bruce Knight, principal and founder of Strategic Conservation Solutions and former chief of the Natural Resources Conservation Service, served as moderator and set the tone by saying water quality is the biggest challenge facing agriculture. Soil health also was discussed.
 


 
Illinois farmers ready for harvest rush
Ted Mottaz - Elmwood, Ill., Welcome drydown: The crop maturity process has gone into high gear this past week. With the upcoming high temperatures this week, we should see some significant corn drydown. We are counting on this drydown before we get started by the end of the week.

Stalk quality still seems to be good, but it is always something to monitor. People who I have talked to are not sharing any yield data at this point. However, when I asked one agribusinessman what he has heard about corn yields, he came back to me with the question, "Would you be satisfied with yields between 240 to 250 bushels per acre?"
Harvest progressing slowly in Indiana
Jason Scott - Delphi, Ind.,Harvest arrives: Harvest is here, and it's my favorite time of the year. The early 2.8 maturity soybeans dried enough to get a couple days of cutting accomplished. They looked the best out of all of our varieties all season, and they cranked out the yield, too.
 
Indiana From the Fields
First field made 75 bushels per acre. Second field made 76. Test weight on them was fairly light at 55 pounds. We've been pushing for higher bean yields the past few years, and we seem to gain about two bushels per year. We hope the rest yield as well, but lodging is worse in the later ones.
