Pastor Berg's Message
Reform: make changes in order to improve something.

To reform something, that is to take something in one form and then manipulate it into a different form. The hope is that you are making something better because the old form was not what it could be.

When a potter takes clay it is in one form, a lump. The potter takes that lump and places it on a wheel and works it into a new form. Hopefully, a form that is useful or beautiful.

October, for Lutherans, is a month when we reflect on "The Reformation " .   Read the rest of the article here: Rev Tor Berg Blog

The 2015 winners will have their framed photos returned to them; thank you for allowing us to display them this past year.  Congratulations to all our participants.

In October we will feature our considerable library collection of books on Martin Luther, including many recently purchased new books.  As we begin the 500th anniversary of the Reformation, we highlight these books.   Although the Reformation had many other actors,October 31,1517 became a symbolic day and Luther became a figure larger than life 500 years ago.

Please be sure to pick up a copy of the introductory article about the ELCA Reformation celebration from the September 2016 Living Lutheran. (On the library file cabinet, right by the door where you check out books.)

Check it Out!

BUILDING UPDATE

Our insurance carrier will be covering south side window replacement and roof repair, due to fire damage, in October.  A leak was recently discovered in the upstairs kitchen sink drain. This will be a major project to repair starting in early October.  Rerouting of the drain will not be covered by our insurance, but repairs of the damage to the walls and floors, will be covered by our insurance.

FLC Finance Committee

First Lutheran Church has Opened a
Scottrade Account to Accept Donations of Securities
A charitable contribution of long-term appreciated securities — i.e. stocks, bonds and/or mutual funds that have realized significant appreciation over time — is one of the most tax-efficient of all ways to give. This method of giving has become increasingly popular in recent years because of two key advantages:
·         Any long-term appreciated securities with unrealized gains (meaning they were purchased over a year ago, and have a current value greater than their original cost) may be donated to a public charity and a tax deduction taken for the full fair market value of the securities — up to 30% of the donor's adjusted gross income.
·         Since the securities are donated rather than sold, capital gains taxes from selling the securities no longer apply. The more appreciation the securities have, the greater the tax savings will be.

Annual Sock Drive for Compass Housing Alliance and Nightwatch

October is the beginning of cold weather and wet pavement.  Help us support our homeless folks by buying new socks to help  them weather the cold, wet winter in Seattle.  A new, dry pair of socks is a big gift for a cold and wet individual.  Thanks for your annual support of this mission. Sock it to the Homeless.

Your Scrip proceeds at work in our community

The Social Ministry committee has voted to use $200.00 of Scrip proceeds to help Canyon Park Junior High with the  Hang-Time  after-school program, led by Northshore Community Schools' partner, Northshore YMCA.  Hang-Time  is a supportive and welcoming environment where junior high students are encouraged to discover new talents, participate in enrichment and fitness activities, complete homework with college mentors and increase their connection to school and community. $250.00 of $25 Fred Meyer gift cards have also been given to CPJH for distribution, at the discretion of the school staff, to families in need of help.

At his request, we supply Pastor Berg with Safeway Scrip cards to give to folks that come to him for help.

The Social Ministries Committee is committed to use Scrip funds for the needs of our local communities. We appreciate your support of the Scrip program and encourage you to buy more scrip in the narthex on Sunday mornings . You may also purchase  Scrip Now   (online) to benefit FLC. Last year Scrip proceeds exceeded $4000.00. Lets continue to put Scrip to work in our community.

Thank You!

Dear First Lutheran Church,

I wanted to thank you for your support and prayers while I was deployed. I am now home safe and sound.

Best Regards,
Karl Krueger
