Message from the Chairman

The Chamber of Commerce Golf Tournament was held Friday, September 23 at Belle Meade Country Club, and was a huge success. We had a packed field of 23 teams who enjoyed a beautiful day of golf. A number of chamber members set up tables around the course to promote their businesses.  Thank you to our presenting sponsors, The Knox Foundation & State Bank & Trust Company; University Hospital McDuffie for putting on the putting contest; all of our team & holes sponsors for their support; Belle Meade Country Club for taking care of our crowd; and the volunteers who worked hard to make the day a huge success. Special thanks go out to Debbie Jones, Belinda Campbell & Matt Morris. With their leadership the number of players nearly doubled from last year as did the funds we were able to raise.

Upcoming events include Fall Crows & Hay Bales; judging is Wednesday, October 5 so be sure to have your entries ready! Business Expo in October, business after hours hosted by University Hospital McDuffie, Camellia City Festival, Tour of Homes, Christmas Parade: a lot of great things are happening between now & the end of 2016. Make plans to be there!

Employer (HR) Committee
The Employer (HR) Committee held their first meeting of the year on Tuesday, September 20th at One Stop.  Participants from several industries in McDuffie County were in attendance as well as insurance agents and legal professionals.  We were fortunate to have Demetrius Abraham, Attorney in Thomson, GA, speak to the group on the New Overtime Labor Law that will go in effect in December.

The Employer (HR) Committee meets on the third Tuesday of each month at 7:45 am for a program provided by experts in the fields of labor laws and hiring practices. The next meeting will be Tuesday, October 18th. Contact the Chamber for information regarding upcoming programs or to RSVP for the event.

Leadership McDuffie
Dear Business Leader:

Each year Leadership McDuffie, a leadership program associated with the Thomson-McDuffie Chamber of Commerce, seeks nominations from local businesses and churches for participants in Leadership McDuffie.  As we begin preparations for the 2017 Class of Leadership McDuffie, we would like to encourage you to participate or nominate a leader from your organization to participate in this program.

The program will emphasize topics important to our community and will provide participants with a greater awareness of community issues, needs, services, and resources.

The goals of Leadership McDuffie are:
  • To promote, stimulate, and train leaders for the political, business, and civic communities of McDuffie County.
  • To act as a forum to educate our county leaders and community members on issues which affect the social, economic, and cultural growth and development of our community.
  • To foster long range planning for our county.
  • To encourage more involvement in the community development process.
The program consists of a kick-off retreat in January (over-night Friday to Saturday) and 6 additional classes (ranging from ½ day to a full day) held from February through June.  The tuition associated with the Leadership McDuffie Program is $350 with the first non-refundable payment of $150 due with your completed application no later than November 18, 2016.  The final balance is due by December 15, 2016.  Although it is not a requirement for a business to sponsor nominees, it is welcomed as a show of support.

We hope that you will seriously consider this opportunity .  To register, the nominee must complete the attached application and submit it with the deposit to a Leadership McDuffie Board Member or the Chamber of Commerce no later than November 18, 2016.

Sincerely,

Leadership McDuffie
Board of Directors

Chamber Ambassadors
Farmers State Bank hosted the September 7th Chamber Ambassador meeting.  Each month ambassadors get together to discuss the upcoming events, member retention, and possible new members.  These key individuals work diligently on promoting the chamber and bringing together the community businesses.

Every month we recognize the Ambassador of the month, and this month's winner goes to Juanita Thomas of Legal Shield.  Congratulations!

Get Ready for the Camellia City Festival!

Plans are in place to hold the Camellia City Festival (formerly known as the Festival Off Main) December 3rd.  We are reaching out to local businesses, churches, schools and civic organizations to participate in this event to create a fun-filled day for the citizens of McDuffie County and surrounding counties.

The Tree Lighting at the Depot will begin at 6:00 pm with entertainment from Maxwell Elementary. The Thomson Fire Department will have hot chocolate and popcorn.

Also, we'll have the Tour of Homes, Reindeer Run (5K), and the Christmas Parade.  So go ahead and make your plans for the 1st weekend in December to create Christmas magic in downtown Thomson.

We have a couple of open spots for homes in the Tour of Homes.  If you or someone you know would like to showcase your home on this tour, please contact the Chamber.

The Christmas Parade's theme is O'Holy Night.  Let's make this parade bigger and better and remind people of the meaning of Christmas.  We will be playing music on Main Street along with a live broadcast on WTHO radio station.  Your parade emcee's are Bill Hopkins (Watson & Knox Real Estate)  and Julie Langham (Augusta Technical College).

Please contact the Chamber to find out how to get involved or click here for more information
