September Students of the Month
Max Mergentime - 2017
Future Mechanical Engineer, Max Mergentime has had a memorable time at North Hunterdon these past few years.  Max is president of the German Club, member of the German Honor Society, member of the Math Honor Society, and competes on the Fencing Team during the winter season.  He also fences at Medeo Fencing Club throughout the year.  Max’s favorite class at North is AP Calculus with Mr. Sorg.  He really enjoys math and the challenge of problem solving.  It is also very nice to be in a class filled with people who feel the same way.  Max’s favorite memory at North Hunterdon was in his freshman physics class.  He had to do a bottle rocket project for Mr. Brochinsky.  The class spent the whole day hanging out and launching rockets.  After they launched the rockets for the first time, a couple of them were able to launch their rockets for a second time with double the pressure.  Max is applying to many schools but his top choices are Purdue and Lehigh.  He would like to study Mechanical Engineering and Applied Mathematics and plans on fencing in college, but not competitively.  Good luck Max!

Elizabeth Fink - 2017
Senior, Elizabeth Fink has made a lot of great memories at North the past three years.  Her favorite classes at North so far have been Honors Pre-Calculus with Mr. Cierech and AP Biology with Mrs. Flynn.  Elizabeth says Mr. Cierech and Mrs. Flynn are both amazing teachers who really sparked her interests in those subjects.  They both made the classes fun to attend.  Elizabeth has been a member of the North Hunterdon cross country team as well as winter and spring track each year.  She is a member of National Honor Society, Spanish Honor Society, and Math Honor Society.  Some of Elizabeth’s favorite memories throughout her North career have come from her time on the cross country team.  The Halloween practices and the bus rides back from meets are always some of the highlights of her first semester.  In the summer, you can find Elizabeth working as a lifeguard and swim instructor at Winnewald Day Camp.  She also does a little of both during the school year.  Elizabeth is applying to Lehigh, Tufts, and Cornell.  She plans on majoring in Chemical Engineering with a minor in some kind of bio-science.  Good luck Elizabeth!

September Athletes of the Month
Austin Frank - 2017
Cross Country runner, Austin Frank started running competitively in the Hunterdon Lions Track Club in fourth grade.  He then continued running in middle school and in high school where Austin became a serious distance runner.  This is where he found his love for the sport.  Austin’s strongest skill in Cross Country is mental toughness because racing is both physical and mental.  Anything can happen during a race.  The North  team started the season off with a great performance at the Randolph Invitational.  Both the JV and Varsity teams won the large school races and many of them ran a personal record.  Austin ran a personal record of 16:54 for the 5K.  This year, the team hopes to qualify for the final state meet, the Meet of Champions.  They put in a lot of work over the summer and have a lot of potential to make it to the meet.  Austin participates in Ski Club at North because he loves to snowboard with his friends.  He also plays the violin and ran a marathon in 3:34:10 last spring in the snow.  Austin plans to run in college, either varsity or club.  His top school so far is UConn where he will major in Environmental Engineering.  Good luck Austin!
Ana Vlad - 2017
Senior, Ana Vlad has been playing tennis for the past thirteen years.  She started playing when she was four years old and began playing competitively when she was around 12 years old.  Ana is currently part of the United States Tennis Association (USTA), which has helped her get more practice with matches and tournaments during the offseason.  USTA provides a great opportunity to play tennis all year round and stay fit throughout the year so she is prepared when the season begins.  Ana’s strongest skills are her confidence and strong mindset.  This year, she hopes to make it to the county tournament final and make it into at least the quarterfinals in states.  Ana plays first doubles with Catrina Gutescu.  Their biggest competition coming up is the Hunterdon Warren Sussex Tournament.  The girls should be able to dominate most of their opponents because they are able to focus and not let their competitive nerves bother them.  Ana is applying to Rutgers, Villanova, University of Georgia, and Penn State.  She hopes to play tennis at the varsity level while majoring in business.  Good luck Ana!

Week of Respect and School Violence Awareness

In accordance with the Anti-Bullying Bill of Rights Act, the first week of October has been classified as the “Week of Respect.”  The third week in October is designated as “School Violence Awareness Week”.  These weeks are designed to ensure that all students in our school will be receiving age-appropriate instruction on respecting themselves and others.  The theme of respect is instrumental in reducing incidences of bullying and helping students to feel comfortable in our school.  North Hunterdon High School will be observing both weeks in all departments. School Security
As we recognize School Violence Awareness Week from October 17-21, we want to share with you the Standard Response Protocol.  This Protocol is followed by all school districts in Hunterdon County and consists of four major actions: Lockdown, Lockout, Evacuate and Shelter In Place.  During our mandatory monthly security drills, we practice these actions so that our students and staff will know what to do in a real emergency.  All first responders have also been trained in this Protocol so if we call a Lockout, police, fire, EMS, rescue squads, etc. know what that means.  This Protocol was designed by the I Love U Guys Foundation and more information can be found on their website: http://www.iloveuguys.org/ .

Photography Student Showcase -
Bethany Gawalis '18
Hi, my name is Bethany Gawalis, and I am a self-taught photographer. Let me tell you a little about myself and my path with photography. I am a current Junior here at North, and I began taking photos in July of last year. My mom always told me that I had a good eye, so she and my dad surprised me with a Nikon D3300 for my 15th birthday. I had never really tried photography before that, so it was a new and exciting learning experience.

The majority of my first photos were of my older sister, until I was bombarded with requests for photo shoots from my friends. In the past year, I have shot for big events like the VBS at South Ridge Community Church and even Senior portraits.

Surprisingly, I shot completely automatic until March of this year, which is when I really saw my photos begin to change. I was becoming bored with photography, and quite frankly that was because I had never actually researched my camera to learn how to use it. In an effort to revive my interest, I spent days upon days reading and trying new things, ending with results that I did not even think were possible. I tried new types of photography such as macro and astro. I even taught myself manual, and now that is the majority of how I shoot. The camera I use is an average DSLR that came with a typical 18-55mm lens. However, I bought a 55-200mm lens in December of last year. These two lenses are great for new photographers, but now that I am becoming more advanced, I am looking into new bodies and lenses. To get back to the point, ever since March I have been hooked on taking photos, it is one of the things I enjoy most in my life, and I am extremely thankful for the help provided to me by my family and my close friend Judson Graham.

Thank you for reading my story, and I hope you enjoy my photos!
