New Foundation Executive Director
Poly warmly welcomes Laura Green as the new Executive Director of the BPI Foundation! Laura joins us from the Foundation for Baltimore Leadership School for Young Women, and will begin her Poly career on Monday, October 3. Welcome aboard, Laura!
Poly Junior Named National Hispanic Scholar
Martin Orellana Guzman has been recognized as a 2016-2017 National Hispanic Scholar. The award is presented to students who scored in the top 2.5% among Hispanic and Latino PSAT test takers in the region. Each year, the National Hispanic Recognition Program (NHRP) honors more than 5,000 academically outstanding students from the more than 250,000 Hispanic/Latino juniors who take the PSAT/NMSQT. Approximately 250 of the top-scoring PAA student from Puerto Rico are also included. Students with a cumulative junior year grade-point average of 3.5 or higher are designated as Scholars. Robotics to Host VEX Competition
Poly will host the VEX Robotics competition on November 5. We are in need of volunteers to serves as judges! If you are interested, please contact Ron Hoge at [email protected]. This volunteer opportunity is a great way to show your support for Poly Robotics!
Mentors needed for the Engineering Department and Project Lead the Way
The Poly Engineering Department and Project Lead the Way (PLTW) teachers need your help!
Poly incorporated Project Lead The Way in 2012 to enhance the current engineering curriculum as well as to provide a rigorous educational opportunity for motivated students. Now in their senior year, the first PLTW students are taking the Engineering Design and Development (EDD) capstone course this year. Part of this course will include "a grand challenge." It is our goal to pair the students with real-world mentors as they perform research to choose, validate and justify a technical problem.
We are seeking mentors who work in the following fields: energy, environment, food, health, security, or water. Mentors will be asked to do the following:
- Have a problem you are currently working on in a professional environment to solve.
- Commit to mentor and guide a student through the year-long problem-solving process.
- Be available to come to Poly to meet with your mentee(s) every other week at a designated time between 8:30-12 pm for approximately 45 minutes from September through June.

BPI Foundation Updates
The BPI Foundation has purchased 60 new computers, 30 for the History Department and 30 for the Engineering Department. Additionally, the Poly Foundation has purchased 12 new Smart Boards which will be located throughout the school, serving each department. Thank you to all alumni and friends who provided donations that have made these purchases possible to assist our students!
Aerospace Science Instructor Joins Poly
Colonel Gina Humble ("Colonel"), Poly's new Senior Aerospace Science Instructor (SASI), is a retired Air Force Officer with over 23 years of active duty military service. This is her first year with MD-933. While on active duty, Colonel Humble served in a variety of staff and command assignments in aircraft command and control, intelligence, installation support, ceremonial operations and manpower and personnel. She also served as an Air Force Military Aide for President Bush and President Obama.
Senior Master Sergeant Randy Letschin ("Sarge" or "Senior"), another Aerospace Science Instructor (ASI), joined MD-933 in 2004 and is also a Poly Alumni. He retired after 25 years of military service in the Maryland Air National Guard where he specialized in life support operations. As Superintendent, SMSgt Letschin was responsible for the maintenance and inspection of pilot equipment as well as the training of aircrews in ejection procedures, survival, escape and evasion.
Fall Sports Update
The varsity football team brought the trophy back home prevailing in the prestigious Roger Wrenn Bowl vs the Patterson Clippers with a final score of Poly 22 Patterson 0!
Girls volleyball is off to a strong start this season, and was included for the first time pre-season in The Sun's volleyball players to watch.
Poly girls soccer defeated City by a score of 5-0 on September 14.

2016 Poly-City Alumni Golf Tournament Recap
The 29th Annual Poly-City Alumni Golf Tournament is in the books. Eighty-four golfers set out to play on August 1 at the Country Club of Maryland. The luncheon and socialization before the golf was as usual as many friends and colleagues got together to "catch up" on their activities over the past year. Click here for a list of winners! For just $30 per year or a $200 one-time, lifetime dues payment, you can support the efforts of the BPI Alumni Association! Beginning this year only annual or life memberships will be available. Your Board of Directors has voted to end the partial life payment program. Those members still a part of the program are being asked to send in the remainder of their payments and become Life Members. Your generous contributions allow the BPIAA to continue the programs and scholarships for the students of Poly. The BPIAA supports the open house program, the Poly website, manages the Annual Alumni Dinner, the Poly/City Golf Tournament and sponsors the Hall of Fame and Distinguished Alumni recognition programs.
