H. Luke Shaefer, associate professor of Social Work and Public Policy at the University of Michigan and co-author with Kathryn J. Edin of "$2 a Day: Living on Almost Nothing in America", addressed a sold out audience at United Way of Washtenaw County's Campaign Kick-off on September 13, 2016.  He related stories of the people that he met as he documented how the number of households, surviving on virtually no income, has skyrocketed to 1.5 million American households including 3 million children.  He spoke about how inequity and discrimination work against these people as they struggle each day to find employment, a safe place to live and food.

39% of Washtenaw County Families are struggling....

Local statistics for Washtenaw County show that in 2012, 20,283 households or 15% of all Washtenaw County households were living at or below the Federal Poverty Level.  That's only $11,170 annually for a single adult, or $23,050 annually for a family of 4.  Compare that to the estimated 1 year Household Survival Budget* for Washtenaw County of $19,127 for a single adult and $60,659 for a family of 4.  There are 33,561 or 24% of Washtenaw County households that fall in the gap - with income that is above the Federal Poverty Level and below the Household Survival Budget.  ALICE is the acronym used by United Ways to describe those that are Asset Limited, Income Constrained, Employed.

#VolunteerWashtenaw Spotlight

School is in full swing and we'd love for you to join us in helping kids succeed in school so they can go on to succeed in life. Did you know that students from low-income households are 3% less likely to be proficient in reading and 35% less likely to be proficient in math, Even just a couple of hours a month can change the course of a child's life.

Can you help? One hour a week. One life changed.
Find ways to serve...
