Cordero, Cohen Join Rubicon at WHO Landmark Meeting
|
World Health Organization (WHO) leaders shared their perspectives and vision for the promotion of health around the world on September 2 as part of a landmark meeting at the World Health Organization in Geneva, Switzerland, with The Rubicon Group, in partnership with the Alliance for Health Promotion.
Sherman College President Edwin Cordero, D.C., Executive Vice President Neil Cohen, D.C., and other chiropractic leaders from around the world participated in discussions on how chiropractic can help meet WHO goals and how The Rubicon Group might assist with various global initiatives.
Speakers at the meeting included Eugenio Villar, M.D., Coordinator, Social Determinants of Health; Faten Ben Abdelaziz, Ph.D., Prevention of Non-Communicable Disease Department; Joel Schaeffer, Communications Officer; and Gaudenz Silberschmidt, M.D., Director, Partnership and Non-State Actors.
The Rubicon Group provides a common voice for vitalistic chiropractic education and practice and is a collaborative effort of Sherman College of Chiropractic, Barcelona College of Chiropractic, the Chiropractic Academy at Dresden International University, Life Chiropractic College West, Life University, McTimoney College of Chiropractic and New Zealand College of Chiropractic.

Celebrating the Life
of Helen McPike Brown, D.C.H.
The Sherman College family gathered on September 15 to celebrate the life of Helen McPike Brown, D.C.H. Attendees shared memories and heard from Dr. John Hart, Brown Museum curator; Dr. Laura Greene‐Orndorff and Dr. John L. Reizer (authors of Chiropractic Mavericks: The Story of Helen and Dr. Gordon Brown); and special guests Drs. Thom and Betty Gelardi and Dr. Gordon Brown. Helen’s artwork and memorabilia were on display as well. Though not a chiropractor herself, Mrs. Brown had a rare appreciation of chiropractic philosophy and a unique commitment to sharing chiropractic with others. View event photos here.

Sherman Hosts Chamber
Business After Hours Program
Spartanburg Chamber members, local alumni and college employees and leaders convened at Sherman College on Tuesday, August 30, from 5:30-7 p.m., as the college hosted the monthly Business After Hours Chamber program. The college’s café operators, The Farmer's Table, served refreshments, and the local Sugah Cakes bakery supplied cupcakes and macarons. Door prizes were awarded, and senior student interns hosted a spinal screening. The event was designed to welcome Chamber members to campus and to celebrate the college’s positive impact in the community.

Georgion Wins T-Shirt Design Contest;
Shirts Now Available at Sherman College Bookstore
|
In August, the Sherman College Bookstore asked students, employees and alumni to create and submit their best ideas for chiropractic-themed shirts to the store. After receiving an overwhelming total of 33 entries into the contest, an online survey was sent out to the Sherman community, where voting took place over the course of two weeks. By a substantial majority of votes, the winner was chosen, and the Bookstore is pleased to announce that staff member Megan Georgion was the creator of the winning design.
Megan is the college’s institutional research and assessment coordinator. She had never received chiropractic care before joining the Sherman family three and a half years ago, but now sees the value in getting her spine checked regularly. She says the inspiration for her design came from the chiropractic ideal of ADIO, and she felt the B.J. Palmer quote would resonate with students, faculty and staff.

Participate in Sherman PRide Day on Thursday, October 27
|
|
Fast becoming a favorite college tradition, the sixth annual Sherman PRide Day is slated for October 27, 2016. On this day, we ask alumni and friends to celebrate their affiliation with Sherman by sharing positive information about the college in their offices or on social media. It’s easy to participate on Sherman PRide Day, no matter where you are. Here are some ways you can join in:
- Wear a Sherman College shirt
- Shout out on social media with photos or a status update regarding Sherman College (make sure to use #ShermanPrideDay)
- Post a link to the Sherman website
- Host a chiropractic career session
- Talk about Sherman to family, friends and patients…just work it into your conversations
- Change profile photo to something Sherman-related
- Invite a potential student to shadow you at work
- Refer a student to Sherman

Stephens Joins NBCE Part IV Test Committee
|
|
Assistant Professor of Clinical Sciences and Health Center Case Doctor Sarah Stephens, D.C., participated with the Part IV test committee earlier this month at the headquarters of the National Board of Chiropractic Examiners (NBCE) in Greeley, CO. The test committee approves items to be used on future examinations that the NBCE administers.

Health Center Names Intern of the Month
|
The Health Center faculty recognizes interns each month who excel in clinical performance, patient management, professionalism and analytical and adjusting technique. The August 2016 Intern of the Month is Ashley Liew. Liew graduated in September and plans to return to his home country of Singapore to practice with his mentor, Kelvin Ng, D.C., ’09.

Sherman Student Named Toastmaster of the Year
|
Sherman College student Tim Hartman has been named Toastmaster of the Year for the second year in a row by Toastmasters International Club #1453. “It is an honor being the first back-to-back Toastmaster of the Year in 60 years,” Hartman shared of his success in the group. “Allow your passion to fuel your purpose and eventually you can become an elite in your profession.”
Toastmasters International, founded in 1924, is the leading organization dedicated to communication and leadership skill development. Through its worldwide network of clubs, Toastmasters helps nearly 280,000 people communicate effectively and achieve the confidence to lead others.
A Raleigh, NC, native, Hartman is very active at Sherman College and across the profession. He serves as a member of the Reach Out and Recruit (ROAR) student leadership program at Sherman College, which recently named him Student Leader of the Year. Through Hartman’s efforts via speaking engagements and interactions with college students, nearly 70 prospective students have asked for more information about Sherman College and three have enrolled.
Traveling to visit as many offices, seminars and mission trips as he can, Hartman takes chiropractic with him everywhere he goes. He is a founding member of the Omicron chapter of Delta Sigma Chi, and he serves as a member of many Sherman College student organizations.
