Dear Saint Rose Families,

Last Friday we had an incredible day on our pilgrimages.  I am very appreciative of the core teachers, Anne Brahier, Dee Dansack and Louise Sarra, for organizing this day.  Our teachers did an excellent job managing the day and keeping track of everyone. All of the students had a prayer service on the way to and on the way back from the sites.  Classes completed Mercy Door activities once they returned back to school.
I was able to attend the Sorrowful Mother Shrine in Bellevue. We had a great experience.  Our students celebrated Mass, learned about how the missionaries founded the shrine and continue to care for it, and toured the 160 acres.  I know that the students and families that visited the National Shrine and Basilica in Carey and Holy Rosary Cathedral had equally wonderful experiences.  Thank you to all of our families for their support of this day.

Sincerely,

Dr. Bryon Borgelt
Principal

Hygiene Kits

Thank you to our students and grandparents for assembling over 350 hygiene packets on Grandparent's Day. These kits were then delivered to the DeSales Outreach Center to assist the homeless of Toledo.

Year of Mercy

Thank you to the parent chaperones, teachers, liturgical ministers, and priests who facilitated our pilgrimages last week to Holy Rosary Cathedral, the Sorrowful Mother Shrine, and Our Lady of Consolation.  What a wonderful day to experience our Catholic faith in the diocese, walk through a holy door, and receive the mercy of God.

We encourage you, as a family,  to participate in the Sacrament of Reconciliation so that all of you may feel the mercy of the Father.  Together perform works of mercy within the home and within the community.

Counselor's Corner                            September 2016

This month's lesson focused on the Lifeskill of Organization, which emphasized various ways to stay on top of homework and school work. From writing in their daily assignment notebooks, to keeping their desks and lockers tidy, students discussed many tips and tricks to stay on top of being organized this school year.

Guidance Lesson Recap:

Grade K - As a class, we read the story Pigsty by Mark Teague. The story was about a boy who procrastinated in cleaning up his room. As the silly story continued, pigs started to show up as the mess grew larger. As a class, we talked about the many different strategies we can use to stay organized at home and at school.

Grade 1/2 - We read the story Matty in a Mess by Jane Simmons. This story was about a couple of bears that had two different personalities when it came to cleanliness and organization. Matty was organized and tidy, while Milly was not. Throughout the story, it emphasized how we all can work on being neater, while still getting along with friends who may like things different that we do. As a class, we talked about many ways in which we can stay organized during the school year and students had a chance to organize their desks.

Grade 3/4- We read the story What a Mess by Tom Lichtenheld. This story emphasized how easy it can be to get disorganized at home and how much work it can be to fix the problem. As a class, we talked about strategies that may help to stay on top of being organized so it isn't so much work in the end. Students then had a chance to organized their desks or lockers.

Grade 5- Students discussed how organization is similar to a puzzle. At times, it seems like a maze to find an exact place for certain items. Students had a chance to see how many various typed shaped blocks into a worksheet with a picture of a 'locker' on it. Students then had the opportunity to use their strategies in organizing their lockers.

Grade 6-8- Students had the opportunity to plan a game called the Backpack game. Two students volunteered to see who could find a paper with an X labeled on it; however one backpack was neat while the other was a mess. Students discussed how challenging it can be to find what you need when supplies are not organized. Students then had the opportunity to organize their materials and lockers.

Important Program:In early September, our 6-8 th graders listened to a presentation about depression, suicide, and understanding the warning signs among students their age. The speaker from Children's Resource Center (a local mental health agency) reviewed warning signs, risk factors, ways to help a friend, and how to talk to a trusted adult if he or she or a friend may need some support. This is a great time to continue to talk to your children about any stresses in their life and if they may be struggling with depression or having any unsafe thoughts. If you have any questions or concerns about this topic, feel free to contact me by email or phone.
