Presentation: PBIS and Cultural Responsiveness - Felisha Parson, District 65 teacher, presented research findings from her doctoral dissertation -
The Integration of Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports and Cultural Responsiveness: Closing the Discipline Gap by Moving Toward Culturally Responsive Schools.
The purpose of Dr. Parson's study was to examine the perspectives of middle school certified staff on culturally responsive practices and the implementation of PBIS focusing on school-wide approaches to discipline and the impact to African-American male students.
As part of her research, Dr. Parson studied suspension data and PBIS implementation at Chute and Haven middle schools and held a focus group to understand the level of cultural responsive training among staff. The presentation offered findings which were similar to national findings and offered recommendations for the district on culturally responsive training and PBIS implementation.
Race and Educational Equity: Development of Policy - The policy committee chair provided a brief update on next steps as the district works toward developing a racial and educational equity policy. Corrie Wallace, equity consultant for District 65, will bring forth recommendations as she conducts "equity walks" in each of the district's 18 schools. The District Equity Leadership Team (DELT), comprised of over 30 faculty, staff, and administrators from across the district, will have its first meeting of the school year this month. DELT will review different racial equity impact assessments, such as the one available in the agenda packet, for the district's consideration. These assessments provide for a systematic examination of how different racial and ethnic groups will likely be affected by a proposed action or decision. The racial equity impact assessment was made available at the Summer Racial Justice Conference that several board members, administrators, and community members attended.
Gifts to the District/Equitable Applications - The policy committee will have future discussions and review policy on equitable gifts and distribution of wealth in the district. The discussion will include input from the District 65 PTA Council as well as information gathered as part of the district's school climate work.
