Market Night Out
Farmers' market open late
In an effort to meet more of our community's needs, the farmers' market is going to have a monthly "Market Night Out!" The first Thursday of each month the market will be open from 2 to 6 PM! We recognize that many of the folks in our area can not make it to market before 5 PM. Here is your opportunity to show how much you appreciate the farmers staying late, just for you. To make it extra fun, we will have guest vendors, a pop up food truck and live music! Come spend your dollars locally and share in the community that markets make! Spread the word :)

5:30 pm Into The Gyre
Runner up in the Feature Film category
Into the Gyre  documents a groundbreaking expedition to study the location, extent, and effect of plastic pollution in the North Atlantic Gyre. Thirty-four volunteer researchers, scientists, and sailors participated in this five-week-long journey in a 135-foot tall ship to the Sargasso Sea, east of Bermuda. The film closely follows four of the researchers as they collect, count, and archive the plastic. Along the way the film examines the history of plastics, the adverse effects it is causing in the ocean, and possible solutions to this problem. 44 minutes

Saturday, October 1

9:30 am Raw Faith
In this incredibly rich story of one family's relationship with a mission, a ship, and each other, we meet the McKaysand their ship, RawFaith-the 88-foot home-built galleon they construct on the shores of the Pleasant River in Down East Maine. The construction project begins as a family-focused endeavor, but it ultimately tests the family's unity and challenges their individual and collective notions of commitment and obligations to themselves and each other. 1 hr 37 minutes

11:15 am Q&A with Gregory Roscoe, Director of Raw Faith

11:45 am The Long Haul
Grand Prize winner in short film category
The Long Haul  follows one woman as she heads to sea in a fishing boat. In the eerie night or under the still-bright sun, it's not always clear where or when this ["this" needs to be defined, so "it," in the next sentence, is clearly understood] is. It appears as a dream removed from the particulars of the woman's circumstances and so in her melancholy narration she might not just be describing her own life alone, but also ours. 10 minutes

12:00 pm Break for lunch in Bucksport

1:30 pm The Weekend Sailor
Grand prize winner in feature film category
In 1973, the United Kingdom organized the first head to head sailing race around the world, inviting expert crews from Europe and other countries against each other. The Whitbread Round the World Yacht Race, which today is called the Volvo Ocean Race, took the sport to its limits. The British Royal Navy purchased six yachts to train 800 men and chose the best four 10-man crews for each of the four legs of the race. An inexperienced Mexican man, Ramon Carlin, also signed up; he was in his fifties, and had a crew that included his wife, son, family, and friends. Although he was a weekend sailor, and although he became the laughing stock of the race and faced racism from the British press, he beat every competing nation.  1 hour, 14 minutes

3:00 pm Looking For a Hero
The producer of this film states that "My father always said he wasn't a hero. But a newspaper article tucked away in a family album told a different story. I set out to uncover the details of a rescue he was involved in almost 60 years ago. Who did he rescue? Where are they now?" This short documentary brings some of the details to light in an attempt to find the true story surrounding the rescuers and the teenage crew that was almost taken away too soon on an August day in 1958. 20 minutes

3:30 pm Q&A with Russ Lane, Director of Looking for a Hero

4:15 pm In Our Wake
From lobster pots and four-masted schooners to whitewater canoeing and seine fishing,
step back in time to 1901 and travel through the decades as we explore Maine's nautical
past. Through home movies, travelogues, silents, and talkies we look at Maine's boats,
freshwaters, harbors, and people. These moving-image clips are focused on Maine's history and multi-dimensional relationship with the waters in and around the State-a relationship ranging from working boatbuilders and lobstermen to tourists water skiing on our lakes and yachtsmen racing off the coast of Mount Desert Island. 1 hour, 10 minutes

5:45pm  The Restorer's Journey
Spotlight series selection
The Restorer's Journey  is a cinematic portrait of the man who took on a monumental task to change the course of wooden boat history. Jon Wilson's passion for preserving wooden boats has inspired generations of boat builders, boat owners, and boat dreamers. When he launched the first issue ofWoodenBoat magazine in 1974, he had no idea how the effect would ripple out into the hearts and minds of hundreds of thousands of readers on every continent. Self-taught and self-made-guided by mentors who "appeared" just as he needed them-Jon Wilson will leave an indelible mark on the boating world and beyond.

6:30 pm Q&A with Jon Wilson, subject of The Restorer's Journey

7:00 pm Evening wrap up

Sunday, October 2

9:00 am Vixen's Voyage
Runner up in short film category
Eleven years ago, Bruce and Tiffany Halabisky decided to abandon the conventional life and set sail around the world in a small wooden boat. They had two children along the way. Vixen's Voyage is a glimpse into their life at sea, and of the places they visited. 14 minutes

9:30 am Vanishing Sail
Spotlight series selection
There is a small group of islands in the Lesser Antilles where the traditions of boatbuilding were once crucial to the survival of local communities skimming a living from the sea. Hundreds of sailing vessels were once launched here, more than anywhere in the West Indies. Today there is no more trading by sail, and these skills have vanished elsewhere in the region. Alwyn Enoe is one of the last boatbuilders practicing a trade passed down the generations from Scottish settlers who arrived in Carriacou in the 18th century. Approaching his 70s and with no more orders coming in, he decided to build one last sailing sloops in his area, with the hope that his sons would continue the trade. The film follows Alwyn's progress and despair over three years-from hauling trees out of the forest to a final traditional launching ceremony on the bayside. 1 hour 28 minutes

New E-Tips Program
Hancock County Law Enforcement and Healthy Acadia

Preventing underage drinking and illegal substance use takes community involvement and coordination. Hancock County Sheriff's Office and other local law enforcement agencies have joined with Healthy Acadia to launch the E-Tips program, which is aimed at engaging Hancock County residents to help in this effort.

E-Tips allows individuals who witness or hear about underage drinking and/or illegal drug activities to anonymously text a tip to law enforcement. The process for providing a tip is simple: text 274637 (CRIMES) and begin the tip with the word "Hancock" followed by your message about underage drinking/illegal drug activities.  The tip is immediately encrypted to guarantee the tipster's anonymity as it is routed through a server in Canada before being directed back to the Hancock County Sheriff's Department. A patrol supervisor will receive an e-mail and text message with the tip. According to Lt. Christopher Thornton of the Hancock County Sheriff's Office, "Given that anonymity, or lack thereof, could be the sole determining factor between providing information or not, this program is another tool that offers the public a conduit for information sharing. At the same time, it protects the reporter's identity. From an investigative standpoint, it's much easier to be proactive with these types of investigations, rather than reactive, spending countless hours dealing with the aftermath."

"E-Tips flyers and pamphlets will be distributed throughout Hancock County towns and schools, to promote the E-Tips line and empower residents to take an active role in promoting community health and safety," said Tara Young from Healthy Acadia. This program is made possible with funding from the Maine Department of Health and Human Services and the generous efforts of the Hancock County Sheriff's Department. For more information on the E-Tips program, please contact Lt. Christopher Thornton at 207-667-7575

Jill Kulbe to Speak About Health Care Directives at Stockton Springs Library

On  Sunday, October 2 at 2:00 pm , Jill Kulbe, MSN, will speak at the Stockton Springs Community Library (SSCL) as part of a monthly series of lectures entitled "Neighbors Helping Neighbors: Seniors at Home in Stockton Springs."

Her presentation will focus on Health Care Directives and as part of the program she will conduct a workshop to help people fill out their own advance directives.

An advance healthcare directive, also known as living will, personal directive, advance directive, medical directive or advance decision, is a legal document in which a person specifies what actions should be taken for their health if they are no longer able to make decisions for themselves because of illness or incapacity.

Kulbe retired in 2013 as Director of Waldo County Home Health Care Services and continues to be active in assisting seniors in healthy living.

This series of talks at SSCL is in response to the growing interest in "Aging in Place" a widespread movement geared towards helping senior citizens stay in their homes as long as possible as they age. With the current growing number of elders, this movement has the potential to improve the quality of life for many seniors.

The program is free and all are welcome. Light refreshments will be served. For more information visit   www.stocktonspringslibrary.org  or call 567-4147.

Seeking volunteers

If you are interested, please join us for a quick information session on Wednesday, September 21 at 5:30 pm on campus at the Fowler-True-Ross House, at 1 Church Street in Searsport. For more information, please call 207-548-2529.

Heirloom apple varieties
Since we can't compare apples to oranges, let's compare apples to apples! Join John Bunker at the Wilson Museum in Castine on October 6 at 7 p.m. in the Hutchins Education Center to learn about heirloom apple varieties in Maine. From the large Wolf River to the tiny crabapple, Maine's trees may have come from far and wide but now they are as American as apple pie. Speaking of pie, the Museum will provide delicious apple refreshments to follow the program. Whether you have your own orchard, want to know more about Maine's apples, or just want to keep the doctor away, you will glean valuable knowledge at this program.

John Bunker has spent the last 44 years operating and living on Super Chilly Farm where he and Cammy Watts grow vegetables, woody and herbaceous ornamentals, small fruit and tree fruit. In 2007, he self-published Not Far From the Tree: A Brief History of the Apples and the Orchards of Palermo, Maine . John coordinates an annual series of organic orcharding classes at MOFGA, the spring "Seed Swap and Scion Exchange" and the October "Great Maine Apple Day." He shares his passion for heirloom fruit varieties by speaking and teaching in the New England area year round.

This program is free. For more information, contact the Wilson Museum at [email protected] or (207) 326-9247

Castine Women's Club and the Wilson Museum

Castine-based entrepreneur Kasey Smith's business, EterNav (short for eternal navigation) was created to help guide families at such times of crisis by using technology and a network of support in new ways. Castine Woman's Club and The Wilson Museum are co-hosting a presentation by Kasey Smith on  Tuesday, October 4  ( 1 p.m. ) at the Museum's Hutchins Education Center. She will describe the changes taking place in the funeral industry and specifically the resources EterNav offers.

Kasey Smith's 25 years of technical and managerial experience in high-tech, growth companies has served her well as founder of EterNav. A participant in the University of Maine's 2016 Top Gun Entrepreneurship Accelerator class for the Bangor region, Kasey & EterNav have been featured on The Pulse of Maine (a morning radio show), as well as achieving semi-finalist status on the Maine TV show Greenlight Maine, a program designed to promote and mentor the development and growth of business in the State of Maine.
