Come Walk with Us - Oct. 15

Join the ActivCare team at the Walk4ALZ, sponsored by Alzheimer's San Diego, on Saturday, October 15 to help support to thousands of local San Diego families impacted by Alzheimer's disease. All the money raised at this walk stays in San Diego.

This year you are invited to participate and walk in honor of W. Major Chance, founder of ActivCare and memory care pioneer, and celebrate his vision of providing a better quality of life for those living with dementia. Each team member will get a free t-shirt.

Avoid Falls this Fall

Did you know that those with memory loss or dementia are 4 to 5 times greater at risk for falling than seniors without impairment?

Protect yourself and your loved one by reducing your risks. Key areas to check in your home include:
  1. Clear Away Clutter - Ensure that pathways are wide and clear of debris.
  2. Throw Out Throw Rugs - These attractive rugs are trip hazards.
  3. Improve Illumination - Here's a bright idea: increase lighting inside. Also consider nightlights to light the way in hallways and bathrooms.
  4. Get a Foothold on Your Footwear - Opt for comfortable stable footwear that provides support.

Senior Safety Tips

Seniors are more vulnerable to certain crimes, such as purse-snatching, mugging, and fraud. You can reduce your risk by being alert and reporting suspicious activity.

To avoid falling prey to scams, people need to be alert to any offer involving money or  property that offers incredible dividends or a quick return on investment. Maintaining awareness about the most common and latest con games, especially online, is an important crime prevention technique.

The San Diego Sheriff Department has a helpful brochure to help prevent crimes against seniors. These helpful tips can keep seniors safe.

Be Aware of Frauds and Scams

Scam Alert! From get rich quick schemes to false urgent calls from the "IRS," scams are all around. You can keep yourself aware of scams happening in your area.

Time to Get Crafty

Want a fun idea for an activity you and your loved one can do together?  Here's a fun, easy-to-do project from Pinterest: Lollipop Ghosts.

You'll need:

*  Facial Tissues

*  Round Lollipops (Tootsie Pops work great)

*  Small rubber bands

*  Thin black and orange ribbon

*  Black Sharpie

Use an entire tissue and cut a quarter piece of a one tissue.

Layer a lollipop (in center), the quarter tissue (also in center) on top of the full tissue.

Squeeze around the base of the lollipop and cinch with a rubber band.

Tie ribbons in a bow to cover the rubber band. Add two eyes with your Sharpie, and, poof! you have a ghost.
