A Message From Greg

Let me share with you a couple of updates:

Lafayette Urban Ministry After School Program:

We are finally at a place where all necessary state inspections have been done and we are prepared for the After School Program to move to our building.  October 3 rd is the date for LUM to begin using our facility for the program.  Children from local area schools will be arriving around 3:15 each day at our church for After School.  The program ends each weekday around 6:00 pm although all of the children are usually picked up between 5:00 and 5:45 pm.  Rev Cindy Haley (an ordained Disciples Minister coincidently) is the director of the program.  She has been the director for several years now and has done an excellent job in that regard.  The program will be housed primarily on the upper level of the administration/education building with occasional use of the fellowship hall.  The liaison to the program on behalf of the church will be our Director of Congregational Ministries, Michelle Schluttenhofer.  The program has been under way since Lafayette School Corp. began classes in August and they have been meeting in the Ewry Center.  There are currently approximately 40 children enrolled.  We are anticipating that number will continue to increase as the school year progresses.  We expect and hope that this partnership with LUM will be long term and we are excited by the prospect of housing this important ministry at our church.  Let me remind that LUM would welcome whatever volunteer time you can give and if you are interested please contact the church office.   This new venture represents work on one of the goals our 20/20 Vision Committee has been pursuing.  Namely, to explore ways that our building can be used for significant ministry in the community.  We look forward to welcoming the children to our facility and are thankful for this great opportunity for service that God has provided us.  AND a big thank you to our CWF who has provided a brand new refrigerator for use by the After School Program.

We are in the midst of our STEWARDSHIP EMPHASIS and our Commitment Sunday will be October 9 th .  Please continue to keep the church in your prayers as we prepare and make commitments to support the ministry of FCC in the coming year.  Your giving enables us as the body of Christ to continue to make a difference in Jesus Name in this community and beyond.  This Sunday Paula Floyd will be sharing some thoughts on stewardship during Faith and Community time and on October 9 th Susie Nelson will do the same.  Remember we give as an expression of thanks to God and as a commitment to serve Christ in all that we do, all that we say, and all that we are.    God Bless You!  See You Sunday!  Peace, Greg

Pastoral Care News
Many thanks to Kathy Stirlen for introducing us to her dog "Tater Bean" and speaking with the group about the kind of ministry the two of them are being trained for. They will both be terrific ministers!

About 10 days ago I had a "God moment", in which God spoke to me through the voice of another. I was in a conversation with a friend, telling her how things are going with my elderly parents, when another friend, hearing the conversation, came to me and said "Jan, you have to read Being Mortal ". I recognized the voice of God in her words, so I bought the book and read it, and it spoke to me. So let me recommend this book to all of you: Being Mortal: Medicine and What Matters in the End , by Atul Gawande, an American surgeon. The book received fabulous reviews from many book sources, and I'll add my own seal of approval to it. If you read the book and want to comment on it as how it pertains to your life, please let me know!
