THANKSGIVING & HALLOWEEN FUN!
Written by Christina Katz; Photo: Fotolia.com
Maybe you grew up carving Jack-o'-lanterns and you want your kids to follow in your footsteps. Who can blame you? Carving pumpkins is a gooey-messy-blast for the whole family. For many of us, it's a time-honored tradition. But exploring other options isn't about turning pumpkin-carving into a Pinterest-perfect art form - it's about having fun decorating in a variety of ways. Why not try mixing things up this year?

Thanksgiving is such a special time to gather with friends and family to create fun new memories, share what we are thankful for, and let's not forget, eat all that delicious food!

For Thanksgiving decorations, think orange, green, and brown with a splash of brighter colors like red and yellow. You probably already have some items inside and outside your home that would fit in perfectly with this party theme like pine cones, apples, mason jars, and serving trays.

Halloween has gotten a bad rap in the last couple of decades due to increased consciousness about nutrition, the availability of indoor activities which allow parents a controlled environment in which to allow their kids the opportunity to collect candy, and concerns about allowing kids to roam around in the night and accept candy from neighbors.

I'm here to address these concerns and, hopefully, convert Calgary to a city of people who love Halloween as much as I do.

For the 22nd year, the Calgary Partners for Safety will be patrolling Calgary streets on Halloween night to give trick-or-treaters easy access to help. More than 800 vehicles will patrol Calgary streets from 6 to 8pm, making sure this will be a safe Halloween. The program is designed to take a proactive approach to Halloween safety and has two objectives:
  • To provide Halloween safety information to parents and children.
  • To patrol communities on Halloween night.
The Calgary Halloween Partners for Safety, coordinated by Calgary's Child Magazine, includes the Calgary Community Standards, the Calgary Fire Department, the Calgary Police Service, Calgary Transit, Emergency Medical Services, Calgary 911, and Shaw Communications.

Your house is more than the place where you live. It's your home, and your most important investment. Carrying out a regular program of maintenance and repairs can help you protect that  investment for as long as you live in your home, and help keep your family  safe and sound in every season.

This Fall, Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation has a variety of simple tasks you can perform to avoid the most common - and costly - problems before they occur, in just a few minutes a week.
