Honoring Two Vermont Poets

Dear Readers,

Vermont lost two of its most lyrical and down-to-earth poets in the past two weeks. Hailing from the Northeast Kingdom, Leland Kinsey and David Budbill were both adept at capturing the essence of Vermont life. Each in his own way, evoked our memorable characters, volatile weather, and such mundane tasks as the universal chore of stacking wood.

Ellen McCulloch-Lovell, former executive director of the Vermont Arts Council, worked closely with both David and Leland to establish the "Writers in the Schools" program at the Council. Ellen wrote a moving tribute to David Budbill, which she presented on September 16th at the Burlington Book Festival.

Howard Frank Mosher, a 2005 Governor's Arts Award recipient, penned a tribute to Leland Kinsey, a former high school student of his, for the Barton Chronicle.

Both poets are probably fishing somewhere on the back side of Judevine Mountain.

Artists + Creatives: Get Counted!

Creative workers are a vital part of our region's vibrancy, but because of the fluidity of their work life they are often under counted and under served. Your feedback can make a difference.

The New England Foundation for the Arts (NEFA) is conducting a survey of creative workers. NEFA hopes to capture the complexity of creative work. The goal is to help advocates, service providers, and other stakeholders ensure that creative workers are better served by employment analysis, program planning, and advocacy strategies.

Help Vermont achieve the highest artist participation in New England.
