Calling all volunteers for the
2016 St. Matthew's Car show!

The St. Matthew's 2016 Car show is on Saturday, October 15, 2016 from 9:00am to 3:00pm.  Each year the volunteers have great time at this event.  We are in need of  volunteers again this year.  If you are able donate your time, please send an email  to   [email protected]  or call Nancy Allen at 404-558-0558.

We also need help with the following:

TENTS:   If you have a Tent (such as an EZ Up) that we may use, please bring it to the church by Friday, October 14th. Make sure your name is labeled on the tent or the cover.  You may want to put it up and let it air out if it hasn't been used in a while.

COOLERS:   If you have a large cooler that we could use, please have them at the church by October 14 th in the Parish Hall.  Make sure your name is on the cooler.

DRINKS: We need donations of powerades, & gatorades to sell at car show. Bring them to the narthex and label "for carshow". A pallet of bottled water has already been donated so there is not a need for bottle water donations.

WE NEED A BAKE SALE COORDINATOR .... We would like to continue having our annual BAKE SALE this year.  Each year parishioners bring baked goods for the Bake Sale.  The items do not have to be homemade. We are in need of a volunteer coordinator to head up the bake sale. Please let me know if you would like to fill this position.

We look forward to this wonderful fellowship and fundraising event.

Blessing of the Animals Service

The feast of St. Francis occurs on October 4.  The feast commemorates the life of Saint Francis, who lived in the 12 century and is the Catholic Church's patron saint of animals and the environment.

The Parish dog-in-residence, PJ, invites all pets and their owners to a special service of Blessing of the Animals on Sunday, October 2 at 2pm.  The service will take place in the side garden next to the undercroft, where we will also bless and give thanks for the wonderful renovation that has taken place.  We will have special pet treats and blessings for both pets AND owners!  Please plan on attending this fun gathering.

SPOTLIGHT ON MINISTRY

St. Matthew's Preschool & Kindergarten

St. Matthew's Preschool was founded in 1985 by a small group of church members, led by Pam Kohler-Camp, who believed that the community was in need of a Christian, preschool aged program. Their first task was to create a mission statement: To provide care and development for each child enrolled, to his or her greater potential, spiritually, mentally, physically, emotionally, and socially. This statement is still used today.
The first school day began in the undercroft of the old sanctuary.  The preschool office was a small storage closet, and the classrooms were the rooms that the youth use today.  The space was small, but it was ample for the 50 children in which it served.
In 1989 the Preschool began the daunting process to establish its own tax exempt status apart from the church. This would allow the Preschool to collect donations, and those donations would be tax deductible for their contributors.  The process was led by Debbie Wicker in conjunction with attorneys, and accountants. St. Matthew's Preschool's tax exempt status was approved, February 9 th, 1990.
In the fall of 1997, the Preschool was moved to the Sandra J. Strickland Christian Education Building. The added space was important to provide for the needs of the community. Enrollment then soared to over 100 students. This is in part to the addition of our Kindergarten class in 2009.  Kindergarten has been a wonderful opportunity for children to take another year to prepare for a long school day.  The Preschool has been blessed to have Kindergarten teachers who hold teaching certifications from the State of Georgia, and that have been able to sacrifice a much smaller paycheck to teach at St. Matthew's. Kindergarten is currently being taught by Ms. Adrienne Donavon, a church member of St. Matthew's.
St. Matthew's Preschool and Kindergarten has grown to meet the needs of the community we serve.  We currently have 77 students enrolled for the 2016/2017 school year, and the children come from families of many faiths, and denominations. As we are spiritually diverse, we are also very culturally diverse. This diversity is important because it is a reflection of the community, and the reason why St. Matthew's Preschool is a true Outreach program of St. Matthew's Episcopal Church.

To make a date to donate visit, www.redcrossblood.org

*************************
September is Childhood Cancer Awareness month
Please consider donating blood in honor of Ms. Ellanor Young.  She's the six year old niece of Levi and Amanda Livermont, best friend of cousin Hannah Livermont, and granddaughter of Jack (Sr. Warden) and Pam Denton.  Ellanor (Ella) was diagnosed with Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia in 2014.  She has about six months remaining of treatment.  She'll likely need blood products throughout her treatment beyond her past needs.  As the Red Cross is running low, NOW is the time to donate!!!

Update from your Long Range Plan committee

We have reviewed all the input from parishioners (over 120 ideas in 14 different categories!) and formulated three vision statements for SMEC.  These were presented to our Vestry for the final selection.  At this time, plans are being made for a date / event to share the chosen vision statement with you, and to celebrate what it means to St. Matthew's.  This vision will drive much of our future work within the parish and in our local community - we look forward to sharing this with everyone!

New Beginnings Retreat

New Beginnings is a renewal retreat for 6-8 th  graders, which supports them in their spiritual growth.  Those in 9-12 th  grade can serve on team, putting on the weekend for the middle schoolers. Youth from all over our Diocese attend this Diocesan event, and we are sending a group of youth from St. Matthew's!  New Beginnings is October 7 - 9. If you would like more information about being a participant (6-8 th  gr) or serving on team (9-12 th  gr), or how you can participate as an adult, please contact Sally Ulrey at [email protected]
