The Erie Canal Museum has added a new permanent exhibit on the first floor of the Museum. The exhibit, "The Erie Canal Made New York," chronicles the history of the inland waterway that helped shape the United States. The exhibit uses hands-on interactive displays, narrative audio tracks and original artifacts to explain why-and by whom-the Erie Canal was conceived, the technology used in its construction, Canal-inspired inventions and the waterway's role in our country's social and economic development.
Attend the Grand Opening celebration on October 4, 2016 at 4:00 pm for your first look at the new exhibit.

Marilu Lopez Fretts and Drew Weber from the Cornell Lab of Ornithology will lead walkers throughout Downtown Syracuse, identifying some of the 100+ types of birds that live in or migrate through our community. For the first time ever, bi-lingual (English and Spanish) narration will be provided on the tour (muy bueno!). If you have binoculars, you are encouraged to bring them, but they are not a necessity.

$10 million renovation planned for Empire Building
Construction expected to begin next month to convert office space into 52 apartments
The Empire Building, a 105-year old building located at 472 South Salina Street (
map), is slated for a $10 million renovation, which will create 52 apartments in what's now office space, on the top seven floors of the building. currently office space. Additional plans call for a one-and-one-half story addition to be added to the building, creating five loft-style penthouse suites. The one- two- and three-bedroom apartments will range in size from 945 square feet to 2,150 square feet. Rent, which will range from $1,300 to $2,800 per month, includes heat and reserved parking in a private lot behind the building. Constructed is expected to begin at the end of October. The first floor will continue to remain retail space.

Now Open at the MOST: "Nature's Machines: Biomechanics"
Exhibit Open Through January 8
The Museum of Science and Technology's (MOST) newest and biggest exhibit,
Nature's Machines: Biomechanics is now open! The exhibit explores biomechanics, the study of the structure and function of biological systems. Visitors will learn how a giraffe pumps blood up its long neck, what makes a cheetah the world's fastest animal and how amputees have new levels of mobility. The exhibit includes 50 actual specimens, 22 replicas that visitors can touch, six large media elements, 12 videos, two digital interactive exhibits, eight mechanical interactives and six man-made innovations that mimic biomechanic processes.
*The MOST will extend its hours to 8:00 pm on
Thursday nights, starting next Thursday, October 6, so that more people can view the exhibit.*
Movie: "Journey to Space"
The MOST's new IMAX movie, Journey to Space, opens Saturday, October 1. The film traces the history of U.S. space travel, culminating with a fascinating look at its future. It includes a tribute to the 355 astronauts who flew 135 Shuttle missions and provides a strong overview of the Shuttle's last major project: the launch and assembly of the International Space Station.
