INDUCTION OF WILLIAM WOODWARD HIGHLIGHTS REMARKABLE LEGACY OF BOWIE'S BELAIR STABLE & MANSION
Thoroughbred racing icon and former owner of Bowie mansion and stable inducted into the NMR Hall of Fame...
And, we're off! 63 years after death, William Woodward Sr. - one of the most celebrated and respected horsemen in American thoroughbred history - earns his rightful place in the National Museum of Racing Hall of Fame, Class of 2016.

Woodward, who appeared on the cover of Time magazine in '39 (after winning the Belmont for the 5th time), inherited Bowie's historic Belair Mansion and Belair Stub Stable from his uncle in 1910.

Under Woodward's guidance, Belair became a hub of 20th century racing brilliance. Belair yielded  101 stakes winners, seven American champions i ncluding "Triple Crown" Winners Gallant Fox (1930) and Omaha (1935), and "Horse of the Year" Nashua (1955). Nashua, by the way, was Woodward's fifth horse to be elected to the Hall of Fame.  During his tenure, Belair horses won over 600 races including the Kentucy Derby (3x), Preakness (3x), and the Belmont (5x).

We'd say that's a pretty darn good day at the track.  To learn more about the County's illustrious place in thoroughbred racing history, visit the Belair Stable Museum , 2835 Belair Drive  in Bowie. Hours are Tues-Sun, 12-4 pm. Belair Mansion, located less than a minute away, is also open Tues-Sun, 12-4 pm.

COMING TO THE STAGE, MGM SELECTS "LIVE NATION" AS LEAD ENTERTAINMENT BOOKER FOR THEATER
Expect 120 or more performances per year at "The Theater @ MGM National Harbor"...
MGM National Harbor made a big play in the DMV entertainment scene by partnering with Live Nation for booking and ticket services for "The Theater @ MGM National Harbor". The 3000 seat (4k+ general admission) flex theater is expected to host cabaret-style acts, world-class concerts, comedy, UFC, boxing, and more in an intimate flex setting. Won't be a bad seat in the house. Ticket service will come thru LN's Ticketmaster branch.

The MGM National Harbor is THE only casino in the immediate DMV and will be a gaming and entertainment magnet along the Mid-Atlantic corridor.  Literally Vegas on the Potomac, it will feature a 125k sqft casino floor with 140 table games (and the 3321 slots), 308 guest rooms, lux spa, over 18k sf of brand retail, dining alley with 10 eateries, celeb-chef specialty restaurants, two unique bar/lounges, and 27k sqft of meeting space. And, accommodating all that traffic (right off the Beltway) is a 5000-space garage.

The other  five State casinos include  Hollywood Casino in Perryville (Cecil County);  Casino at Ocean Downs in Berlin (Worcester County);  Maryland Live! at Arundel Mills (Anne Arundel County);  Rocky Gap Casino Resort in Flintstone (Allegany County); and

ON THE HORIZON, PLANS CALL FOR ADDITIONAL EXTENDED STAY PROPS IN LARGO AND GREENBELT
One will be the county's first Homewood Suites by Hilton, the other a Woodsprings...
Extended Stay offerings continue to expand in PGC. Among other props proposed, pending, or under construction, plans are in play that will add another 240 keys to the grid. Coming to "Downtown Largo" will be the county's first Homewood Suites by Hilton. The 116-room, four-story prop will be located on an 8+ acre tract, off Basil Court, next to the DoubleTree Hotel Largo. The prop will be developed by DC-based Frontier Development & Hospitality Group, owner of the adjacent DoubleTree.

In fabulous Greenbelt, a Woodsprings Suites (no relation to the above) will be coming to Greenway Center. The five-story, 124-room hotel will be built on a 3-acre section of existing parking lot (between the Greenway Center and Maryland Trade Center) at Greenway Center Drive. This prop is being developed by Richmond-based Sandpiper Hospitality, which has also proposed a Woodspring (with room for a second, equal-sized sister prop) off the corner of Arena & Brightseat in Largo extended.

THE NAT WILL ADD CRAFT BEER DRINKING HOLE TO ITS EVER GROWING AND DIVERSE DINE SCENE
The Brass Tap will offer over of 60 craft beers, fine food, and live entertainment...
National Harbor is the second pending location in Maryland for a "The Brass Tap" craft beer bar. It will take space at 164 Fleet Street, at the corner of Mariner Passage.

A growing chain based out of Tampa, FL, The Brass Tap (TBT) is an upscale beer bar  that offers up to 80 different craft beers on tap, more than 300 varieties of imports, local craft beers, signature cocktails, and a large selection of premium wines. There may also be a cigar component. TBT also features a full food menu including Tap Two Lunch offers and Weekend Brunch.

Music/entertainment is a huge part of the TBT experience, so it will be a wonderful addition to the National Harbor night scene. In addition, its a great place for sports with hi-def sets throughout carrying major packages.

TBT-National Harbor is scheduled to open in early 2017. The initial Maryland entry is set to open in B'more later this fall.

REPLACING IRISH HP&K, NEW WHISKEY & CIGAR PUB SET TO DEBUT AT NATIONAL HARBOR
The Irish Whisper is one of two new dines operating out of reconfigured former Harrington's Pub & Kitchen space...
Speaking of the "NAT" and libation stations, opening possibly later this month is  The Irish Whisper at 177 Fleet Street. Whisper is a true Irish pub featuring craft beers, cocktails, wine, and Irish food fare. What makes it unique is that it will also offer 80 different Irish whiskies, scotches and bourbons. There will also be an on-site humidor containing one of the largest selections of cigars at NH.

You may recall in some of our past scribble that the former Harrington's Pub & Kitchen  space (and surround) were being re-structured to accommodate two new dine offerings at NH. Whisper joins regional newbie,  Brother Jimmy's BBQ, that now takes up  the larger footprint at 177 Fleet.

Brother Jimmy's NH, the first and only location currently in the DMV/Baltimore metroplex, is a funky spot specializing in traditional North Carolina BBQ. Their long-standing slogan is "Put Some South In Yo Mouth". Menu items include Carolina Pulled Pork, Northern-Style and Baby Back Ribs, Nashville Hot Chicken Dinner, Country Catfish, Southern Fried Chicken, and the Dixie Hoe Cake. Also available is a host of southern-inspired apps, sandwiches, and salads.

IN BEVERAGE MIX-UP, LOCAL OUTFITS COMBINE FORCES TO CREATE ONE UNIQUE BREW
Craft beer brewer and local coffee company team up to create limited-release specialty ale...
It's call Coffee Co-Lab #1, a limited-edition craft beer made with Joe. Calvert Brewing Company (CBC) and Vigilante Coffee Company partnered to combine two unique taste into one amazing brew.

The inspiration for Coffee Co-Lab #1 is the natural-processed Ethiopian coffee called Hachira, roasted locally at Vigilante Coffee Company in Hyattsville. This bean is known for it's fruit-forward, floral qualities.

CBC then paired the Hachira with a Belgian Singel. The fruit and spice from the Belgian yeast compliment and accentuate the Hachira bean's natural flavors.

According to CBC, "There's enough coffee on the nose to wake you up, followed by cherry, elderberry and coffee flavors, deceptively layered within a refreshing, golden-colored beer."

WHAT'S NEXT, YOU SAY? Coffee Co-Lab #2 will be released October 29 at Vigilante's Halloween Party and CBC's tap room.  CBC's brewing facility and tap room are located 15850 Commerce Court (off Route 301) in Upper Marlboro.
