A Six-Week Fall Series at St. Paul's

PLEASE NOTE, "What is the Bible?" is NOT a replacement for the Tuesday Bible Study Group, led by Sally Burt on Tuesdays at 2:30 p.m.

"If you have been intimidated by the Bi bl e.... th en "Exploring the Bible" offers a grand introduction to Scr ipt ure. Here the wisdom of the Bible is not only explored but also applied..."

-Bishop Will Willimon, Duke Divinity School, Durha m, NC

The theological point of view of this series
  • The Bible is a book that can and should be read by individuals both inside and outside the church.
  • Understanding of the Bible is enhanced and deepened in conversation with others.
  • The tools of scholarship are not incompatible with a faithful reading of Scripture.
  • Diversity of opinion is both a welcome and a necessary part of any education-especially biblical education.

DON'T THINK TWICE
COMEDY  |  R

For eleven years, an improv group called The Commune has reigned as the big fish in the small pond of their New York improv theater. Commune members Miles, Samantha, Jack, Allison, Bill and Lindsay invent comedy without a script and without a net. They're ingenious, they're fast, and they build on each others' ideas like best friends -- which they also are. Night after night they kill onstage and wait for their big break. Day after day they work menial jobs to support themselves. Then they get news that their theater is shutting down, and scouts from a hit TV show come to a performance looking for talent. Only two cast members get the nod, upsetting the dynamic of the group and leaving its future in doubt. Relationships begin to crack as six best friends face the truth that not all of them will make it, and for some, it may be time to give up on the dream and move on. Funny, insightful and honest, DON'T THINK TWICE looks at a common experience that's an uncommon subject for a film: failure .

If you enjoy the movies....this is the group for you.   Once a month (late Sunday afternoon) we will venture to the Dedham Community Theater at 580 High Street to see a movie.   No need to RSVP, simply arrive for the movie and look for Reverend McCarley.   Following the movie we will adjourn to a local eating establishment to reflect on the themes, acting, directing of the movie.   Join us for lively discussion and entertainment that supports our local community.

Community Forum about Question 4 - September 28th

Please join the Dedham Coalition for Alcohol and Drug Awareness for a Community Forum on Question 4: the legalization, regulation and taxation of marijuana, to be held at the Dedham Middle School on Wednesday, September 28 at 7:00 p.m. The expert panel includes John Carmichael, Walpole Chief of Police, Dr. Sarah Rosenberg-Scott, Dedham Board of Health member, Paul McMurtry, State Representative, Fred Newton, President of Hope House, and John Scheft, Attorney Drug Enforcement Dimensions, LLC.   All are welcome to come and  learn about the impact of question 4 on our town and state.

DOGSITTER NEEDED

Sarah Ducas (tel 781-258-5785) is looking for reliable person to preferably stay at her house and take care of Sasha, her friendly beagle, aged 14 between Oct 15-Nov 20. Please email with references [email protected].

ST. PAUL'S BOOK GROUP

7:00 p.m. Wednesday, October 5th at the Rectory

Beginning in October, St. Paul's Book Group will meet the first Wednesday of each month.

October's book is Dead Wake: The Last Crossing of the Lusitania by Erik Larson.

On May 1, 1915, with WWI entering its tenth month, a luxury ocean liner as richly appointed as an English country house sailed out of New York, bound for Liverpool, carrying a record number of children and infants. The passengers were surprisingly at ease, even though Germany had declared the seas around Britain to be a war zone. For months, German U-boats had brought terror to the North Atlantic. But the Lusitania was one of the era's great transatlantic "Greyhounds"-the fastest liner then in service-and her captain, William Thomas Turner, placed tremendous faith in the gentlemanly strictures of warfare that for a century had kept civilian ships safe from attack.

Germany, however, was determined to change the rules of the game, and Walther Schwieger, the captain of Unterseeboot-20, was happy to oblige. Meanwhile, an ultra-secret British intelligence unit tracked Schwieger's U-boat, but told no one. As U-20 and the Lusitania made their way toward Liverpool, an array of forces both grand and achingly small-hubris, a chance fog, a closely guarded secret, and more-all converged to produce one of the great disasters of history.

Also, next month, we encourage you to bring a list of your top 3 or 5 all-time favorite books. We will see if we can match the list to the person. This should be a fun way to get to know each other better.

The Blue Bunny will have copies for us next week at a 20% discount.

If you have any questions, please call Jen Luszcz at 617-803-6504 or e-mail her at [email protected].

OUTREACH OPPORTUNITY - MEALS ON WHEELS

HESSCO Elder Services is looking for volunteers interested in becoming drivers for their Meals on Wheels program. This program, which delivers prepared meals to homebound elders, is in search of volunteers to contribute approximately 1 hour per week to elders who would have difficulty getting their own meals otherwise.

Drivers spend approximately 1 hour a week delivering meals between 11:00 a.m. and 12 noon. You can choose which day of the week works best for you.

If interested, please contact Debbie Fradkin at 781-784-4944 or [email protected]

DONATE YOUR EMPTY PRINTER  CARTRIDGES

Want to make a small contribution to Grace without it costing you anything? Donate your empty printer ink cartridges, regardless of brand. Each moth, your empty cartridges can be recycled into store coupons to be used like cash at Staples. Over the course of a year, we can garner a couple hundred dollars in coupons to use for much needed office supplies. (So don't throw out your cartridges; instead leave them at the church office). Every little bit helps.
