Fall Greetings!

We hope everyone had a great start to the new school year!  This issue of CONNECTIONS focuses on resources related to the many releases the State Education Department has made concerning English Language Arts and Mathematics Learning Standards.  Also, please be sure to check out PNCR's Workshop Calendar and register for upcoming workshops on a variety of topics.  Finally, with Halloween just around the corner, we're pleased to share tips for a safe and enjoyable Halloween.

Q:  "Are school districts required to provide an IEP in the native language of the parent or guardian?" 

A:  No, with one exception.  Districts are required to provide the IEP in the native language of the parent or guardian ONLY if the IEP is provided to the parent as part of the Prior Written Notice Packet.

New England Center for Children Opens $11M Autism Institute
The $10.5-million John and Diane Kim Autism Institute, which opened September 2016, will house research, professional development and technology for the center, allowing it to continue to train its workforce, improve its technology and develop best practices.  To read the full article, click here.

Multiple Systems Navigator
The New York State Council on Children and Families recently launched the NYS Multiple Systems Navigator website. MSNavigator.org is a comprehensive disability information resource built for youth, parents, caregivers and direct-care workers - all of whom rely on support and services from multiple child and family serving systems.  To visit the MSNavigator website click here.  
 
Superintendent Determination of Graduation with a Local Diploma  
At the June 2016 meeting, the New York State Board of Regents approved through emergency action an amendment to section 100.5 of the
Regulations of the Commissioner of Education to require superintendents to make a local determination as to the academic proficiency for eligible students with disabilities to graduate with a local diploma. The Question and Answer document has been updated on June 20, 2016.  To view the full advisory and updated information click here.

DRNY supports the NYS Education Department's decision to provide multiple pathways to a high school diploma, but the proposed Superintendent's Determination regulations must be modified to prevent the discrimination of students with disabilities.  To read DRNY comments click here
