A MESSAGE FROM PASTOR KIM

To the members and friends of Our Savior's,

Today (September 22) is the first day of fall.  Or is it the first day of autumn?  An article I read recently by Forrest Wickman begins with the question: Why is autumn the only season with two names?  Mr. Wickman explains that the modern names summer and winter have been around for more than a thousand years.  But for much of history spring and fall were viewed as secondary.  They were not considered seasons, but extensions to summer and winter.  As late as the 18th century, English writers focused more on the coldest and hottest portions of the year rather than seeing the year as having four seasons. In his final paragraph Mr. Wickman's addresses his question.  He reports that as North America was being settled by the English both fall and autumn were commonly used.  Those in the United Kingdom more frequently use autumn, while Americans prefer fall...thus the two names.

Personally I enjoy this time of year.  As a 5 and 6 year old I autumn_leaves.jpg remember the leaves on the trees in my front yard as well the neighborhood turning brilliant shades of red, orange and yellow.  I recall raking leaves into piles, jumping into those piles scattering the leaves, and then having to rake again.  I remember, too, collecting leaves with my mother and pressing them into scrapbooks.

It seems that people view fall in two ways.  Poets and philosophers like to write of fall's glories.  Mary Ann Evans, i.e. George Eliot so enjoyed fall that she wished she could become a bird so that she could fly about the earth seeking successive autumns.  Turkish playwright and novelist Mehmet Murat ildan advised that in autumn we seek gold, not in jewelry stores but in parks.

Others think of fall as an untidy housekeeper, using a windy broom and torrents of water, to throw things away. One writer (David Wadley) expressed it this way:

The leaves of fall are on parade
All painted bright and lush
With every color, tint and shade
By nature's magic brush

I feast my eyes while these abound
For all too soon they're gone
And the only place the leaves are found
Are knee deep on my lawn.

Both views offer us lessons.  On the one hand we should appreciate life's beauty and joy, letting fall renew and invigorate our spirits.  On the other, as autumn trees shed their leaves we, too, should shed things like bitterness, prejudices, bad habits and errors of all kinds.

God has given us this beautiful season and what we make of it is up to us.

Blessings,
