Health Help
What does the Health & Wellness fee cover?

As part of Syracuse University’s tuition, students pay a Health and Wellness fee. This fee allows them to seek care through Health Services and the Counseling Center. Whether they have the SU Aetna Student Health plan or are covered by a different plan, students do not have to pay a co-payment like when they go to the doctor at home. As long as they are a full-time matriculated student, they do not pay to see a provider at Health Services. The insurance is necessary for laboratory and pharmacy fees within Health Services and any care they receive in the community. Examples of care they may receive in the community might be an allergist or other specialist, urgent care or emergency room, radiology, or an off-site pharmacy.

Flu Clinic Set for October 12
Flu season in the United States can begin as early as October. It typically peaks in January or February.  The single best way to prevent getting the flu is to get the vaccine. It won’t protect you against every strain of flu, but it is formulated to protect against the most common strains that are going around.

Here on campus, our students can begin their flu protection early by getting vaccinated at the free flu clinic on October 12 from 11a.m. to
3 p.m. at Flanagan Gym.

“Everyone on campus should get vaccinated for flu”, Michele Frontale, supervising pharmacist says. “It promotes a healthy campus. The more students, staff and faculty are vaccinated, the more it keeps our teachers teaching and our students going to class.”
Self Care 101
Advice from Health Services

An important new responsibility as a college student is self-care. To have the best chance to stay healthy during the cold and flu season, and beyond students should:

GET VACCINATED.  A yearly flu vaccine is the first and most important step in protecting yourself against influenza viruses. Flu shots are free at Health Services for students and will protect against seasonal flu. Health Services will provide flu vaccine beginning with a flu clinic on October 12, and throughout this fall. Mental Health Awareness Week
October 2-8, 2016

This is a joint effort of the Office of Health Promotion, Student Association, Active Minds, the Counseling Center, Hendricks Chapel, and other key campus groups. Highlights for the week of events include a presentation about substance use and mental illness, a panel discussion about intersectionality and mental health, and hosting therapy dogs on campus. The feature event of Mental Health Awareness Week will be Syracuse Setbacks (Wednesday October 5
at 7 p.m. in Stolkin Auditorium), an event celebrating resilience and perseverance where students will hear from staff, faculty, and administrators about success, failure, and everything in between. Mental Health Awareness Week is not an isolated event, but rather a starting point for many more conversations about mental health and wellness across campus and beyond.

For a schedule of events please visit the Office of Health Promotion website. Updates will be posted on or about September 26.
