The OLMA Overview -- September 22, 2016
We had a record turnout for Back-to-School Night this year, so thank you! It's wonderful being part of a school with parents who take such great interest in their daughter's education. Thanks also for planting our Open House signs in your lawns! We're hoping for a record turnout that day too! If you happen to have some time tomorrow between 10 AM--11 AM, we'd love it if you would join us for Mass. We'll be holding a special ceremony toward the end that you won't want to miss. Next week, we're having an Activities/Clubs Fair for all students on Tuesday morning. We now have 16 Clubs for students! Our sports teams are working hard. Please check the calendar and come on out and lend your support whenever you can. Have a great weekend!
P.S. -- Shadow Day is on Friday, October 7! It's open to young women in Grades 6-8. They can call or visit our website to register. Thanks.

Meet Hope Viviani, Class of 2018
You certainly wouldn't know it now, but OLMA was the last place that Hope Viviani expected to spend her high school years. In fact, she remembers kicking and screaming the whole way here on the day she shadowed. "My mom insisted that I shadow, so I had no choice, but I told her there was no way I way I was going to an all-girls' school," said Hope. "By the time I finished the day, I told my mom that we were done looking at high schools because OLMA was it for me."
As hard as it was for her to admit, mom was right. "Coming here reminds me of a giant sleepover," said Hope. "I don't have to worry about looking perfect because there are no guys, everyone accepts me for who I am, and I get to spend every day with my best friends." She also likes the fact that every teacher knows her name -- and the names of her friends and family members too.
Now a Junior, Hope is especially excited about the upcoming Ring Mass -- a right of passage for OLMA students. She's also excited about her new classes and having teachers like Mrs. C and Mrs. Fortis. Hope is on the soccer team and will be rowing crew again for the third year. Last year, Hope and her teammate, Christine "BB" Porcaro, rowed their way (in OLMA's Varsity Double boat) to the National Rowing Regatta held in Ohio. "It was a first for OLMA, a great experience and something I'll remember for a lifetime," she said.
In her spare time, Hope volunteers in her hometown as a micro-soccer referee for kids ages 4-6. "I've been doing this every Saturday since the 6th grade and absolutely love it," she said. "We teach them the basics of the game and we all have fun." We sure are grateful for your mom, Hope, and so glad you are here.

OLMA Seeds New Greenhouse Club
While Old Man Winter will soon be knocking on our doors, it will remain hot and sunny inside Our Lady of Mercy Academy’s greenhouse all year long. Located on campus, the greenhouse was recently refurbished and is now filled with plants and pots seeded with flowers, vegetables, herbs, and more. The owners of the green thumbs that are responsible for this new plant life are part of one of OLMA’s newest clubs.
They call themselves “Green Girls” and couldn’t be happier spending time tending their plants. Green Girls are led by Mrs. Barbara DeValerio, OLMA Math Teacher. “The girls are especially excited about growing vegetables and herbs that will be used by Mrs. Stanzione to prepare lunches,” said Mrs. DeValerio. “The club is a great way for students to get some hands-on experience about plant science and horticulture, as well as to enjoy some fellowship. We plan to donate the plants and flowers we grow to Habitat for Humanity for re-planting in the yards of the homes they build.”
Green Girls is one of 16 clubs offered to OLMA students. Others include: Interact, OLMA Ambassadors, Bake Club, Debate Club, Creative Writing, French and Spanish Clubs, Chorus Angelorum (vocals and instrumental), Art, Yearbook, Sisterhood, Mentoring, National Honor Society, Student Government, and Prom. On Tuesday, students will participate in an Activities Fair to learn more about each one.
