The communities that Lake Park High School serves have a long-tradition of supporting our Lancers. From providing scholarships for our graduates to attending athletic events and fine arts programs during the school year, the residents and businesses have a strong presence in our schools.

Lancer students and staff are grateful for this support and look forward to continuing to build a tradition of giving back. Now in its second year, "Make a Difference Day" returns on Saturday, October 1 and promises to be even bigger and more impactful. View a highlight video from the inaugural year to see service in action!

Next weekend, over 550 Lancers - supported by 50+ adults - will be sporting a sea of navy and white at volunteer sites throughout the community. The goal is simply to involve as many students, teams, groups and clubs as possible in our community at the same time.

The event kicks off at West Campus with light breakfast snacks at 8:00 a.m, followed by service projects from 9:00 to 11:30 a.m. and snacks upon returning to campus.

Transportation will be provided to and from all projects, which include activities such as:

* packing meals at Feed My Starving Children

* repairing homes for DuPage Habitat for Humanity

* assembling care packages for cancer patients at Phil's Friends

* volunteering at the Itasca Oktoberfast 5K

* clean-up at Busse Woods

* working in the yards of
senior residents

* visiting with residents at nursing facilities

* writing letters to the troops

* collecting food and personal care items

* beautifying the grounds of
campus

Many organizations even reached out about participating again like this director of an assisted living program who expressed, "I was doing some planning for next month. I remember the wonderful young people that you sent to us. I was wondering if you had plans for this year or if we could extend an invitation to some of your group who might like to come."

Thank you to everyone who contributes to Make a Difference Day. The rewards of this experience are abundant! I am proud of our students for participating and demonstrating "The Lancer Way" by being respectful and responsible.

Lake Park Libraries Welcome Best-Selling Authors
Lake Park's West Campus Library will host New York Times best-selling author David Arnold on Monday, September 26  during 6th and 8th periods.

Arnold  is the author of Mosquitoland and released Kids of Appetite this week. His presentation will cover his path to becoming a writer and the process of brainstorming, writing and revising. Students can purchase copies of his books and have them autographed.

Lake Park's East Campus will welcome best-selling author Scott Westerfeld during 7th and 8th periods on Monday, October 3. All students, regardless if they attend the presentation, can purchase copies of Zeroes or Swarm and have them personalized by Westerfeld. Students may pre-order books or purchase them the day of the visit. The author will also autograph books that students already own.

Westerfeld is a prolific writer who has spanned a number of young adult genres. His series include, The UgliesLeviathan and Afterworlds. His latest series, Zeroes, is about six young adults with superpowers who fight crime. The newest book in that series, Swarm, is the focus of his tour. His books are available in the school library for checkout.
Lemonade Stand Raises Money for Pediatric Cancer
Throughout the week, Lancer students and staff have been raising money and awareness for fighting childhood cancers by purchasing cups of lemonade and ice tea, paper lemons to honor someone who has fought or is fighting cancer, and raffle tickets to win donated prizes.

With one day still to go, the fundraising goal of $1500 has already been surpassed! Re ading specialist Kim LeRette Lewis and her students recently read an article about Alex's Lemonade Stand and selected it as a worthy cause to support.

Founder and cancer patient Alexandra "Alex" Scott developed the mission: to find cures for all children battling cancer. It all started with one front-yard lemonade stand.  When she was just four years old, Alex held her first childhood cancer fundraiser in her front yard and raised over $2,000. By the time of her death in 2004, Alex had raised $1 million and inspired a legacy of hope and cures for childhood cancer.

To assist in Alex's life's work, Lake Park will continue to accept donations through Sunday, September 25. Visit the  Lake Park team page to support Alex's Lemonade Stand  Foundation.

Additionally, you can support Lake Park's fundraising efforts on Friday, September 23 by dining out at Buffalo Wild Wings in Hoffman Estates, 2540 New Sutton Road.  Print this promotional flyer and present it to the associate taking your order for dine-in and carry-out orders. Buffalo Wild Wings will contribute 15 percent of all pre-taxed food sales (less alcohol and promotional discounts) from any guest that presents the fundraising ticket on September 23. Bring your appetite and support our Lancers helping to raise funds and awareness for Alex's Lemonade Stand!

Theatre Season Opens with Children's Play
The 2016-17 theatre season debuts with a fresh, entertaining adaptation  of the famous fairy tale,  The Emperor's New Clothes . The curtain rises at 7:00 p.m. on Wednesday, October 5  at the East Campus Dice Auditorium. Admission is free; tickets are available at the door.

When a swindler, played by freshman Jay Harrison, and his son, Young Roland, portrayed by freshman Jack Hagen, visit a town whose people are too afraid to stand by their own convictions, they realize they have found an easy mark. While the swindler plots to hoodwink the vain emperor (freshman, Brian Provenzano), his son falls in love with the beautiful Mary (freshman, Linda Presta). There is plenty of trickery, comedy and romance along the way!

The show features a cast of more than 30 underclassmen, and will also be performed on October 4 and 6 for local schools.
IMTS Field Trip Creates First-Hand Experiences
Over 60 students from Lake Park's Technology and Engineering program visited the International Manufacturing Technology Show at McCormick Place on September 16. The IMTS is the nation's largest and longest running manufacturing trade show, with over 2,000 vendors and 115,000 visitors from 112 countries in attendance.

Students learned about and experienced first-hand the latest and most advanced manufacturing technology in operation today, including 3-D plastic and additive metal printing, robotics, and precision machining.

Lake Park Lancers also viewed a presentation on career opportunities within the manufacturing industry, and had the opportunity to participate in the Smartforce Student Summit. The Summit included many hands-on activities and a career fair highlighting technical education programs, community colleges, and engineering schools.

It is important that students do as well as possible on each component of this exam as these test scores will impact student placement into classes next fall.

Each student planning to attend Lake Park next year must take these tests, which will provide individualized information about a student's aptitude in reading, writing, language, and math.

The schedule for each middle school follows:

Peacock Middle
Spring Wood
St. Luke

Community Connection
The League of Women Voters of Roselle/Bloomingdale will sponsor a Candidates Forum in the East Campus Auditorium on Sunday, September 25. Doors will open at 1:00 p.m. for a "meet and greet" with the candidates, followed by a moderated candidates forum which starts promptly at 1:30 p.m.

Candidates have been invited for the U.S. Congress District 8, Illinois State Senate District 23, Illinois House Districts 45 and 56, and DuPage County Board Districts 1 and 6.

The event is an opportunity for voters to meet, ask questions and learn more about the credentials and platforms of candidates prior to the Tuesday, November 8 general election. During the candidates forum portion of the event, questions on issues from the audience and the League will be posed by an impartial moderator. Early voting for the general election begins on September 29.

Through a continued partnership with Glenbard High School District 87, Lake Park families are invited and welcome to attend the Glenbard Parent Series (GPS) Navigating Healthy Families. The program is free and open to the public; no registration is required.
