My Friends House
Creative Chefs Program Begins Thursday, September 29 at Ascension, Los Angeles!

My Friends House, an ELCA-affiliated public benefit corporation founded by Ascension, Los Angeles in 1995, focuses on hunger prevention and healthy living in an inner-city environment.

Their innovative Creative Chefs program, held Thursdays from 5:00 - 7:00 p.m, uses local chefs to promote healthy eating and cooking with the goal of improving the health of the community.  Chefs introduce program participants to recipes that use a variety of foods to increase their intake of fruits, vegetables, legumes, lean meats, and healthy alternatives to processed and fast foods.  They demonstrate different cooking methods that reduce the intake of sugars, fats and salts while still creating food that tastes delicious.

This is an interactive program in which participants assist in the preparation of the recipes and then get to taste the final product.  They leave the 90 minute class with the  recipes  so that they can make them at home.
Planting tomatoes and peppers at the community garden

My Friends House maintains a community garden to help provide fresh produce for its food pantry which provides food weekly for seniors, the unemployed and underemployed, the working poor and others on limited incomes, women, children and the homeless.  They also provide a Parish Nurse who who screens individuals for lifestyle diseases - hypertension, diabetes, high cholesterol and obesity. Visit My Friends House website for volunteer and giving opportunities!
Mt. Olive, Santa Monica Shelters Homeless Students

Mt. Olive, Santa Monica's Bruin Shelter recently was profiled in the Santa Monica Daily Press.

College can be a fun, exciting and a challenging time in a person's life. Learning responsibilities, self-growth, and unfortunately for some students they learn to live on the streets, in a car and do whatever they can to get through the coursework.

Mt. Olive Lutheran Church is tackling the problem head on by providing a limited number of beds for students attending local schools.

The Bruin Shelter opens on Oct. 2, and they have already accepted 10 students, half are UCLA students and the other half are SMC students. This shelter provides a 90-day stay for females and male students; a waiting list has already formed.

You can get involved! Come to the benefit concert for the Bruin Shelter on Friday, October 14 at Mt. Olive, Santa Monica. Details below!

"Catechism Revisited:
The Reformation"
Rejoice Conference Day of Theological Education
Saturday October 8
9:00 a.m. - 1:00 p.m.
Danish Lutheran Church,
16881 Bastanchury Road
Yorba Linda

For many Lutheran adults, the last time they studied the Small Catechism was likely in confirmation class as a young teenager. Yet, the building blocks of our faith and practice are greatly shaped by this small book. The Rejoice Conference of the Pacifica Synod will be holding a day of theological education we are calling "Catechism Revisited" where we will spend time looking in-depth at the different parts of what make up our Lutheran faith. This year's presentation will focus on the Reformation.

As we approach the 500th anniversary of the Protestant Reformation this year's presentation will look at the key historical and theological points of the Reformation as well as seeing how it is in force today. The Bishops of the Pacifica and Southwest California Synods  of the ELCA will provide us with a morning full of insight on the Reformation and its continuing impact. The c ost is $15.00, which includes coffee and pastry in the morning and lunch at noon.

RSVP by October 3, 2016 to Pastor Anne-Grethe Nielsen at [email protected] or (714) 993-6362. Financial assistance is available!
