Herren Gives Powerful Presentation

Former NBA player, Chris Herren, gave a powerful presentation to our students today about his struggle with substance abuse and his miraculous recovery. He encouraged students to be open and honest about their challenges and to be mindful and helpful to family and friends who may be struggling. Chris met with students after the assembly and attended the balloon release organized by SADD (Students Against Destructive Decisions) that symbolized substance abuse awareness.  Counselors were available the remainder of the day to help students process the message on a personal level.

The presentation was made possible by the generosity of Dr. Dennis & Mrs. Rosie Johnson & Family in memory of Spencer Kubala of YC's class of 2012.  Spencer's brother, Austin Kubala, opened the program and Patrick Montgomery, Spencer's best friend, ended the program by emphasizing that no one is immune to the grasp of substance abuse and friends should not turn the other way or join in. Mrs. Seufert reminded students that we are a family at YC and we should look out for each other.

Chris Herren's goal is to make a difference in at least one life.  Today, we believe he made a difference in the lives of many.
Welcome
Welcome to Mrs. Alicia Heist who has joined our Art Department as a part-time teacher for Art 7, Art 8, and Survey of Art.  Miss Heist brings several years of Art teaching experience with her, having taught in Texas and most recently in Lancaster County. We look forward to seeing the creativity she inspires in our students.
Musicians Selected for Symphony

Congratulations to the following students who auditioned and were named to the York Junior Symphony Orchestra for grades 5-8: (pictured left to right), Mason Kovach (trumpet), Brian Inman (trombone and harp), Nathaniel Gingerich (trumpet).  These students had to sight-read a piece of music, play their scales, and perform a piece of their choice as part of their audition process. Bravo!

Hunter Karpulk was also selected to the York Youth Symphony Orchestra where he will play trombone.  Hunter is in his 1st year of eligibility for this group that includes musicians in 9th grade through the 4th year of college. Talented company!  Congratulations Hunter!

Those who participate are invited to the October 7 football game to cheer with the cheerleaders on the sideline and play with the band in the stands.  We look forward to welcoming the YC students of tomorrow!
Have a Heart of Gold
Teresa (Hruz) Dillon'84, died unexpectedly on May 6, 2014, leaving behind two young sons, then 15 and 11, grieving parents, siblings, a large extended family that she adored, and more friends than can be counted.  To help continue Terri's legacy, her family is sponsoring the Heart of Gold fundraiser on Saturday, October 8, at Sinking Spring Manor, the former homestead of the Pfaltzgraff family.  The event will feature heavy hors d'oeuvres, beverages, live music, raffles, and a silent auction. Dress is business casual.  There is a $25 per person suggested donation with checks made payable to Teresa Dillon Memorial. For tickets, email  [email protected] .

All proceeds from the event will go toward scholarships - the first, to a student at St. Joseph Catholic School in Dallastown, where Terri was educated, and the second, to a student at York Catholic High School, from which she graduated. She was proud of the education she received at both schools and always wanted to make it easier for other boys and girls to get the same education.
In Case You Missed It...

The Big 4 Volleyball Tournament was held this past weekend at York Catholic.  Teams from Delone Catholic, Trinity, and Berks Catholic joined YC in dedicating this tournament to "Grammy" Autrey, mother of YC head coach, Phil Autrey, who is battling ovarian cancer.  Grammy is pictured above in the center with her girls (and coaches) from the YC volleyball team.

The YC Marching Band had a successful weekend at the Hempfield band competition.  The band earned their best score of the last 4 years and placed 4th.  They  were also ranked 2nd in the overall music scores in their division.
