ZED AND CHERYL FRANCIS INVEST IN YWCA METROPOLITAN CHICAGO'S ECONOMIC EMPOWERMENT WORK
Chicago business and philanthropic leaders Zed and Cheryl Francis have chosen to invest $500,000 in YWCA Metropolitan Chicago's ( Dorri McWhorter) economic empowerment work on the south side. This gift comes ten years after an initial $500,000 gift Cheryl and Zed Francis made during the YWCA's Model YWCA capital campaign. That gift made the opening of a new YWCA south side center possible and Cheryl and Zed chose to name that center after their mothers, Laura Parks and Mildred Francis.

This new gift will ensure their mothers' legacies live on and funds will support the programmatic development, operations and staffing at the Parks Francis center with an emphasis on Economic Empowerment Services that impact low to moderate income women and their families as well as youth-focused services that ultimately foster skills growth, professional development, employment retention, economic self-sufficiency and aspirational opportunities. ROBIN KELLY HOSTS SYMPOSIUM ON "DEFINING THE BLACK FEMALE EXPERIENCE"
U.S. Congresswoman Robin Kelly (D-2), co-chair of the Congressional Caucus on Black Women and Girls, hosted a symposium in Hyde Park called, "Defining the Black Female Experience," in conjunction with the University of Chicago's Center for Race, Politics and Culture, the Polsky Center for Entrepreneurship and Innovation ( Ellen A. Rudnick) and the Office of Federal Relations at the University of Chicago's Polsky Center.

The symposium featured a series of panels that explored the current condition and opportunities to improve the lives of African American women and youth, featuring local academics, community leaders, medical professionals and entrepreneurs.

"Black women have long been the backbone of our communities," Robin Kelly said. "Our strength in being the foundation of our families is a great source of pride for us, but it can also cause us to neglect our own needs. That is what the Congressional Caucus on Black Women and girls is about - prioritizing the needs, concerns and lives of Black women." Read more...

NEW NOVEL BY DEBRA SNIDER
Debra Snider's new novel Lost Wyoming was released this month. It's a poignant, ultimately uplifting tale about a bright and thoughtful, yet thoroughly disillusioned heroine as she discovers how family shapes who we are, who we aren't, and who we have the potential to become. Lost Wyoming is available in print and ebook editions online at Amazon, Barnes & Noble, iBooks, etc. and in bookstores.

"Examines the complexities of relationships, the challenges of communicating feelings, and the difficulties of discovering what one really wants....[Snider] makes some deft observations and asks some important, universally relevant questions....Her prose remains eloquent and often beautiful throughout." -Kirkus Reviews
