Northwoods Credit Union Wins 2 State Awards!

NORTHWOODS CREDIT UNION WINS COMUNITY SERVICE AWARD

Northwoods Credit Union of Cloquet has been honored with a 2016 Dora Maxwell Social Responsibility Community Service Award. The award, sponsored by the Minnesota Credit Union Network (MnCUN) and the Credit Union National Association (CUNA), recognizes credit unions for the activities they coordinate that benefit their community or a specific charity.

The credit union's program was Rooted in Community, a fundraising program. Each Friday, Northwoods Credit Union employees pay money to wear jeans. Every month the employees submit names of non-profits and organizations in need of donations.  Once all groups are compiled, they then vote to see who the winner is for that month.  The winner receives a full month worth of jean money.  This past year we supported 12 local groups and donated over $3400 in employee donations!

"This program is the result of a brainstorming session during a staff meeting," said Northwoods Credit Union President, Barb Brown.  "I think our Rooted in Community program is a great example of credit union values!  Our staff comes together each month to raise money for a group that they, or a coworker, are passionate about.  When the situation calls for it, they're not afraid to jump in and donate their time and resources as well as their money."

The award is named in honor of Dora Maxwell, an early credit union pioneer. One of the original signers of CUNA's constitution at Estes Park, Colorado, Maxwell worked as an organizer for the movements' trade association (then called the Credit union National Extension Bureau) and held numerous volunteer positions at the local and national level. In addition to organizing hundreds of credit unions, she developed volunteer organizer clubs and worked with organizations on behalf of the poor.

NORTHWOODS CREDIT UNION WINS MEMBER SERVICE AWARD

Northwoods Credit Union of Cloquet has been honored with a 2016 Louise Herring Philosophy-in-Action Member Service Award. The award, sponsored by the Minnesota Credit Union Network (MnCUN) and the Credit Union National Association (CUNA), recognizes credit unions that demonstrate in an extraordinary way the practical application of the movement's principles in serving their members.

The credit union's winning program was 2nd Chance Lending. The employees at Northwoods Credit Union love helping people get back on their feet and raise their credit score.  They understand that bad things happen to good people and want to get the word out that there are loan options besides high-interest lenders.  A little help and financial education and people are back on their feet in no time.  In 2015 Northwoods Credit Union approved 93% of all loan applications, proving that helping people always comes first.

"We truly believe in the Credit Union Philosophy of People helping People," said Barb Brown, Northwoods Credit Union President. "We've been told that we remind people of how business 'used to be done.' We're proud to say we've been doing business this way for 80 years and we intend to keep doing so."

The award is named in honor of Louise Herring, an active supporter, organizer and champion of credit unions. She was the Ohio delegate to the 1934 national credit union conference in Estes Park, Colorado, where she signed the original constitution for a national credit union association. Herring believed that credit unions should work in a practical manner to better people's lives. She saw the credit union as more than just a financial institution. In her own words, "The purpose of the credit union is to reform the financial system, so that everyone can have his place in the sun."

The Credit Union's winning entry's will advance to the national competition, where they will compete with community service projects and member service projects from credit unions in other states.

Employee Spotlight
Paula Olsen

This month we're continuing our Employee Spotlight section with Paula!

Paula is our Vice President of Accounting and has been with Northwoods Credit Union for 29 years!  Paula has been with the Credit Union since we had our small office in the paper mill and has seen many changes here at the Credit Union over the years.  We're lucky to have her on our team!  Please keep reading to hear her thoughts of working at Northwoods Credit Union.

"I started working at the credit union in May 1987.  At that time we only had 7 employees and our only office was located at the Potlatch mill.  No private loan offices back then, we just did the loan right at the teller counter.  Such close quarters enabled us to get to know our coworkers and our members very well.  There have been many changes through these last 29 years.  When I started only Potlatch employees and blood relatives of the credit union were able to join.  We have also had a few name changes and introduced some new products and services like mobile banking, Kasasa checking, and a rewards credit card.  I have been blessed to work in many different departments prior to the accounting department.  I have been a teller, a loan officer, a mortgage loan officer, a collections manager, and now I am the Vice-President of Accounting.  The experience I gained from working in these departments have helped me greatly in my current position.  I am proud to represent Northwoods Credit Union and I hope our members still feel like they can get the same personal service that we offered when I started back in 1987.  We have the best members so you deserve it!"
