SAN JOSE'S MANUFACTURING COMEBACK

#BuiltInSanJose

Between 1990 and 2015, the San Jose Metro Area lost 95,500 manufacturing jobs, from a total of 254,600.  Some jobs were lost to offshoring, others by workers priced out of the housing market.

In 2011, City officials and business leaders worked together on policies that included tax incentives for new manufacturing equipment purchases, preventing the loss of an estimated 65,000 manufacturing jobs. The Pratt Center's Equitable Innovation Economies program studied the impact of San Jose's efforts, including the City's "San Jose Works" program with partners such as Jabil, offering an intensive introduction to the opportunities in manufacturing to high-risk, inner city kids. A perspective on the city's progress is offered in an in-depth article in NextCity  .

Economist Joe Cortright presents city success findings at San Jose City Hall

Economist Joe Cortright made a whirlwind tour through San Jose in October, addressing audiences at San Jose SPUR, the Chamber of Commerce and City Hall, all in 24 hours.

Each presentation provided a different look at his City Observatory's research   on what makes cities successful.

OED arranged Cortright's appearance at City Hall, and our economist, Michelle Thong,  blogged  about the study.

One nugget - there has been a 50% growth in college educated 25-34 year olds from 2000 to 2014 in central San Jose. Cortright noted a close association between an increase in the proportion of college-educated people and an improved economy, which bodes well for San Jose.   Cortright's presentation   provides more interesting details on what makes a successful city.

GLEN MEETS ZEN FOR 2ND VIVA CALLE SJ!
#WhySJ

Did you miss the 100,000 people on the San Jose streets, walking, biking, skating, pushing strollers, toting backpacks, grooving to tunes? Viva CalleSJ was held for the second year on a perfect fall Sunday, over a route from Japantown in the north to Willow Glen in the south, with a west-ward link into the Burbank area. With the main streets closed to motorized traffic, Viva Calle was the place to see every kind of human-powered locomotion.

Activity hubs in Willow Glen, Burbank, Arena Green and Japantown provided lots of fun, information and refreshments for the crowds.

The second year of the event has seen at least a tripling of participation, and it's clear that Viva Calle is becoming a huge community event.

The team implementing Viva Calle was led by the City Parks, Recreation & Neighborhood Services, with much help from the departments of Transportation, Public Works, Police, Fire, City Manager's Office and Office of Cultural Affairs.

Community partners and sponsors included Kaiser Permanente, Youth Connections Foundation, Santa Clara County Department of Public Health, the Knight Foundation and the Silicon Valley Bicycle Coalition. See the Mercury News article for more pictures and details.

/ SWEET NEW SPOT OPENS
#SJPlace

This month saw the formal opening of Rita's Italian Ice & Frozen Custard shop, located at 5892 Santa Teresa Boulevard, in the Santa Teresa Square/Nob Hill shopping center.

The 750-square foot Italian ice and frozen custard shop is the first San Jose location for the  Philadelphia-based franchise. Owners Humza and Annie Chowdhry presided over an official grand opening/ribbon-cutting ceremony that was attended by family members, community members, San Jose City Council Member Johnny Khamis, the City's Small Business Allies, and a representative from the Second Harvest Food Bank. The Chowdhrys are donating a portion of their proceeds to Second harvest.

Even Sharkie, the San Jose Sharks mascot, showed up later that evening because, c'mon, who doesn't love a great Italian Ice or Frozen Custard dessert?
