The Network Applauds Governor Cuomo for Advancing MOU
On Sept. 14, Governor Cuomo directed the New York State Division of the Budget to execute a memorandum of understanding (MOU) to release approximately $2 billion in funding for the creation of more than 100,000 units of affordable and supportive housing over the next five years, including 6,000 units of supportive housing. It now is before the Legislature for their review.

First Awards Announced for Empire State
Supportive Housing Initiative (ESSHI) 
Almost 80% of the awards went to Network members.  
 
On Sept. 13, Governor Cuomo made the very first awards for the state's new supportive housing services and operating program - Empire State Supportive Housing Initiative (ESSHI).  Awards went to 84 not-for-profit agencies, totaling over 100 separate projects. 



Rebecca Sauer is the Supportive Housing Network of NY's new Director of Policy and Planning
The Network is delighted to announce that 
Rebecca Sauer  has joined our staff as Director of Policy and Planning. Ms. Sauer comes to us most recently from Related Management Company where she was the Senior Director overseeing the affordable housing programs for 2,300 units in four cities including New York.

StoryCorps and the Network Celebrate the Power of Supportive Housing
 
In 2016, we continued our thriving collaboration with StoryCorps, the widely honored nonprofit that describes itself as "America's oral history project," and had the opportunity to record, preserve, and share the stories of 30 supportive housing tenants and staff members.

 
New This Year: Case Management Certificate Accreditation
CUCS & the Network will offer members the opportunity to complete the Case Management Certificate Program.

This year, the Center for Urban Community Services (CUCS) Institute and the Network will offer members the opportunity to accumulate continuing education credits.

The Network over the past year has been working with members to help explore the State's new Home and Community Based Services (HCBS) program and the challenges and opportunities that exist with this new program for supportive housing providers.

On July 19th, The Doe Fund held a groundbreaking for Webster Green: a new 82-unit permanent supportive and affordable housing residence in the Norwood neighborhood of the Bronx.

On July 1, 2016 the life and work of Ellen Baxter, Founder and CEO of Broadway Housing Communities, were featured on NPR's Invisibilia in an episode by reporter Lulu Miller, who introduced the episode by discussing her family's experience with mental illness. 

  
Paul Gualano Tribute

The Network joins the Center for Urban Community Services in mourning the loss of CUCS' long-time Chief Operating Officer, Paul Gualano, who passed away on July 9, 2016.

 

Connie Tempel Retires from CSH
Connie Tempel -- a legend in the world of supportive housing -- retires from CSH.
Sara and Connie -- passing the torch.
Connie Tempel - one of the godmothers of supportive housing and a mainstay of the movement in New York City for the last twenty five years -- is retiring as Chief Operating Officer for CSH today.

 


Funding Updates

NYS Homes & Community Renewal Releases Amended Multifamily Open Window Request for Proposals  

NYS Homes & Community Renewal has released an amended Multifamily Open Window Request for Proposals. This RFP which was originally released in April for highly ready projects, has now been amended to include $150 million for 1200 units of supportive housing STATEWIDE.

Overview of Psychiatric Disorders

With the release of the new Diagnostic Statistical Manual (DSM-5), direct service staff may have questions about the changes to the diagnostic criteria made by the American Psychiatric Association (APA). This training provides an updated overview of the major psychiatric disorders, including Schizophrenia, Mood Disorders, Post Traumatic Stress Disorder, and Borderline Personality Disorder. The training also offers a review of the most significant changes made in the new DSM-5.

Comings and Goings          
 
 
Gary Rodney is stepping down
as HDC President at the end of this month to become Chairman of CREA, LLC, a national low-income housing tax-credit syndicator based in Indiana.

Eric Enderlin, formerly HPD's Deputy Commissioner for Development, will serve as the new HDC President.

Molly Park, formerly Chief Operating Officer of the Settlement Housing Fund, is now HPD's Deputy Commissioner for Development

Claire Hilger, formerly of Queens Catholic Charities, is now a Vice President with Wells Fargo Bank. 
 
Duane J. Vaughn recently left WAIT House to become Executive Director of the Tri-County United Way, based in Queensbury, NY.

Elizabeth D. Greenstein left HPD in July to become the new Chief of Staff at the Mayor's Office of Housing Recovery Operations (HRO).  

Maureen Friar left Community Access to become Executive Director of the Huairou Commission, a global network of grassroots women's organizations that focus on housing, community development, AIDS and resiliency issues.
