Saints Peter & Paul School

HOMECOMING SCHEDULED FOR
THIS SATURDAY VS. SACRED HEART
AT NIKE PARK

H omecoming week is one of the staples of high school and college football.  Alums return to their alma mater to renew acquaintances, visit old friends, and cheer on those athletes who are carrying on the rich football tradition for their school. Like a lot of things in society which people thought would never trickle down to the grade 5-8 level (e.g. cell phones), homecomings for grade school are becoming commonplace throughout DuPage County.  "We've seen other schools have a lot of fun with this idea," said Ruthy Cooper O'Malley '85, who helps coach the cheerleaders and has an eighth grade son, Joe, on the team, "and our parents said why not Saints Peter and Paul too? Last year we decided to do this at the last minute, and this year we are trying to establish a tradition that we hope will be enjoyable for everyone associated with our school."

This Saturday , October 1, is HOMECOMING for our Jr. Varsity and Varsity football teams which will welcome the Wildcats of Sacred Heart (Lombard) to Nike Park to do battle.  Nike Park is located off of Mill Street near Diehl Road.

The Jr. Varsity, consisting of our 5th & 6th graders, open the action at 5:00 p.m.  Coached by Bill Takahashi '88, they are 4-0 on the season and have yet to be scored upon.

Offensive coordinator
Mike Byrne goes  over the playbook with Peter LaScala.
Varsity coach, Chad Sturtz, will lead his banged-up squad in an effort to remain in the hunt for the Suburban Parochial League regular season title.  They are currently 4-1 and still transitioning to new quarterback Peter LaScala after their starting signal caller, Nick Bafia, broke his wrist in a recent victory over St. John of the Cross (Western  Springs).  Injuries have reduced the  squad to 14 players so a raucous and enthusiastic crowd will help get the players' adrenaline flowing and ensure a true home field advantage.

At 6:45 p.m., just prior to the varsity game, all 8th grade players and cheerleaders will be introduced on the field, along with their parents, to be recognized for their dedication, teamwork, effort, and accomplishments.  Kick-off will follow immediately and the entire game will be played under the lights.

This Friday, all fall athletes will wear their sports' jerseys and cheerleaders their sweaters to school to remind the student body of the significance of the game.  The cheerleaders will also be decorating each football player's locker.

We hope you can be a part of this burgeoning tradition for Saints Peter and Paul School, as it promises to be a fun-filled night with plenty of hard hitting and each Trojan team featuring high powered offenses.

Current school families, grandparents, aunts, uncles, cousins, former school parents, and alumni are invited to bring sandwiches and soft drinks and tail gate prior to the JV game.  Nike Park opens at 3:30p.m.

Many thanks to all of our golfers and sponsors who helped make the Golf Outing a success and raise $54,000 for financial aid.

SSPP Trivia

When our school was founded in 1853....

....teachers of first and second graders didn't worry about their students being able to zip up their own coats during the winter as the zipper wasn't invented until 1913 by Gideon Sundback.  All clothes at that time were fastened by buttons as clasps were even introduced until 1893.
