What's Happening this Month at the Tannenbaum Holiday Shop......

Saturday, Oct. 1, 2016 meet author and creator of Oliver the Ornament, Todd Zimmerman. This is a charming story about one family's cherished Christmas ornaments.  "Oliver" was the first ornament mom and dad had and now he is slightly injured and being bullied by the other ornaments. But Oliver never loses his magical feelings about Christmas and overcomes all odds to save Christmas for his family. The book comes with the "Oliver" ornament. Later this year, Todd has other books in this series coming out focusing on Oliver's ornament friends and their stories. There is also an Oliver Puzzle and a book to write your family's Christmas memories in for years to come. So please join us on Saturday and meet this new author!

We are excited to announce that we will be having an Open House on Saturday, October 8th, 2016 . This Open House will feature representatives from Christopher Radko, Fontanini Nativities, and Thymes candles. These representatives will be able to educate you on your favorite lines and help you pick out the perfect items on your Christmas list. They will be in the store at the following times: Radko 11:30-1:30; Fontanini 11-2; and Thymes 10-3.

In addition, from 11-2 we will be having a book signing with the author and illustrator of A Door County Night Before Christmas , Carol Davis and Jan Rasmussen. This book takes the classic "Night before Christmas" story and adds it's own Door County twist. For example, Santa is eating cheese curds and Belgian pies and flying over the Eagle Tower. After leaving all of his gifts he heads on to Wabeno, Waupaca, Wautoma, Wausaukee, and turns left and goes on to Milwaukee! In all of the illustrations, Jan Rasmussen has drawn a small "door" for you discover. This story is truly a delight for all ages and what better way to make this a perfect gift than to have it personalized and autographed by both the author and illustrator.
Christopher Radko 2016 Signed Ornament

Carrying the Magic , the 2016 Christopher Radko ornament that has been signed by the designers Joseph Walden and Mario Tare, features Santa dressed in a long, jeweled coat with a sack of toys on his back, a tree over his shoulder, and a lantern to light the way. This is a limited edition piece, and is only available at a select few gift shops. In fact, Tannenbaum is the only gift shop in the Midwest that will be offering this special piece. Don't miss out - be sure to place your order today! The pieces will be in store for our Open House on October 8th, and available for pick up or shipping.

One of our most popular trees in the store is our Door County tree.  This tree is filled with ornaments that make great souvenirs to remember your trip as well as great gifts for any Door County enthusiast. This year we have a large selection including some of our favorite vendors: Log Cabin Creations, Heart Gifts by Design, Chemart and Country Christmas Eggs.

Log Cabin Creations features ornaments that are hand painted by Wendy Rismeyer, a Wisconsin Resident. These ornaments  highlight popular Door County attractions (e.g. Eagle Tower and Cana Island), restaurants (e.g. Al Johnson's and Wilson's Ice Cream Parlor), and activities (e.g. Ferry boat rides, Camping).  There is even one depicting your favorite Christmas store, The Tannenbaum Holiday Shop! Plus, Wendy is always willing to paint something special for you whether it honors a wedding or reunion that might have taken place in Door County.

Heart Gifts by Design has created a special Door County ornament.  This ornament features bright red cherries on one side and the words Door County on the back.  These ornaments are handpainted and made in the United States.

Chemart has designed a map of Door County ornament. This map is metal and marks many of the small towns in Door County. This is a perfect gift for those who enjoy the charms of all the towns in Door County.

Country Christmas Eggs has developed one of the more unique Door County ornaments by decorating real goose and chicken eggs (after the yolk has been removed).  These eggs are painted and feature many of the common Door County activities. These ornaments are also made in the USA.

Another favorite Door County ornament is the cherry pie from Old World Christmas, because who doesn't enjoy a piece of pie while visiting Door County.  If you would like we can write "Door County 2016" on the back of the pie for you.

Valliancourt

For our friends who are looking for a little more than an ornament for a souvenir, we have our Door County collection of Valliancourt Santas.   For the last couple of years we have been lucky to work with Valliancourt to design an exclusive Santa decorated with iconic places from around Door County.  This year's Santa is a tribute to Al Johnson's .  Santa is walking with a goat and has a picture of the restaurant on his coat.  Each piece is signed and numbered.  Quantities are limited, so order your piece today!
Christmas Legends

This month we are highlighting the legend of the Christmas Spider.  While spiders are often associated with Halloween or an insect to be feared, there is a more positive association of spiders with Christmas.  Legend has it that there once was an old woman who did not have the money to decorate her house for Christmas.  A spider made his home in her tree and began to spin beautiful webs.  On Christmas morning, the first light of sun struck the cobwebs and turned them to silver.  When the woman awoke, she found her tree covered in beautiful silver treasures.  The spider is thought to bring individuals and families good luck.

Another symbol of good luck are lady bugs.  Legend has it that a group of  farmers were suffering from aphids invading their cope of grapevines.  The farmers prayed to the Virgin Mary for help.  The farmers' prayers were answered when thousands of little red beetles appeared and ate the aphids.
Alexander International

Alexander International has added two new Bavarian pewter figurines to this years collection, Sounds of Christmas and Bell Ringer AngelSounds of Christmas features Santa ringing Christmas bells to mark the beginning of the holiday season. The Bell Ringer Angel features an angel wearing a white dress with gold accents and holding two bells.
Disney, Superheros, Star Wars, and more

We are often asked for ornaments featuring popular movie and television characters; however, due to licensing requirements it can be difficult for us to carry these ornaments in the store.  This year, we have worked hard to bring in more licensed characters, such as Elsa and Dory.  This month we are excited to add to these along with ornaments featuring your favorite Disney Characters like Mickey Mouse, Minnie Mouse, Olaf, and Belle.  We will also expand our line of superheros with Superman, Batman, and Spiderman and we have Star Wars, Barbie, and Troll ornaments.   Quantities are limited, so please call, email, or stop by today to pick up your favorite characters!
Snowpinions
For the last couple of years, we have carried a collection of sassy snow people called Snowpinions by Dept 56.  These snowmen and snowwomen have big personalities such as "You had me at Merlot", "Wanna be Reindeer", "King of my Dreams", "Take a Hike" and"Hot Lips".  They are sure to bring a smile to everyone's face!

This year we are excited to announce that Dept 56 has added a Packer Snowpinion.  This snowpinion "super fan" is wearing a cheesehead and is ready to enjoy the Packer game.
Batteries

Throughout the store we have many items that run on batteries.  Some items require AA and AAA batteries (which can be easily found at local stores); however, many of our smaller items require batteries that are harder to find.  In response to our customers request, we are now selling two styles of batteries: LR44 and CR2032 button cell batteries.  The LR44 are sold in 10 packs for $2.99.  The CR2032 are sold in 5 packs for $2.99.  If you have been looking for those little batteries to replace the ones in your favorite light-up ornament look no further than the Tannenbaum Holiday Shop!  We would be happy to help you find the perfect battery for your item.
Christmas in the City Village

A cherub sculpture peeks from the art alcove beneath the double stairs of the Holiday Brownstone, welcoming friends and family members. Classic row house style buildings offer three floors of elegant living to lucky City dwellers. Metal railings set off the porch at the front door as well as the second story balcony. Columns frame the large windows from which warm light fills the December air. Sculpted flower boxes, garlands, and wreaths are tipped with frost. This year Department 56 has paired this piece with the 5th Avenue Stroll accessory, which showcases an elegant woman walking her dog along the avenue.

Come one, come all to see the Nutcracker Ballet!   Tickets are available at the front window for the December 15th opening night of the Nutcracker Ballet at the Majestic Theatre. A duo of giant nutcrackers stand guard with a Christmas tree over the entrance way. This theatre also has a special lighting effects: the light is drawn through the front marquee, directing a glow over the front doorway arches. To accompany this theatre, there is the Nutcracker Dancers, which shows a young girl dressed in her ballet costume walking to the theatre with her mother.

After the annual performance at the Majestic, finish your evening with a cup of coffee or hot chocolate at the Nighthawks. Inspired by the famous painting by Edward Hopper, the Department 56 artist showcase the famous window scene from Hopper's work in this piece. In addition, there is the Study for Nighthawks accessory piece, which has a man and women looking at the restaurant.

For years, Bella has baked the best cupcakes in town at her shop Cupcakes by Bella.  This store front is adorned with scalloped window treatments and a sign with daily specials. A glass looking case is filled with cupcakes to temp potential customers. Shell accents and pink trim complete this charming and irresistible addition to Christmas in the City. Coordinating with this is the Christmas Cupcakes accessory which showcases Bella handing out cupcakes to a couple of children.
Tannenbaum's Reading Corner

This month's featured book is a tale of traveling through the woods. Stopping by the Woods on a Snowy Evening by Robert Frost, takes Frost's classic poem and adds the beautiful illustrations of Susan Jeffers to bring this poem to life.  This book is an easy read for any child, while being a more thought provoking store for the more experienced reader.  This book is also the perfect gift for all lovers of classic literature.
Oct is Breast Cancer awareness month and we have several "Pink" ornaments to honor those who have struggled with this disease. Old World Christmas, Inge Glas, Egyptian Glass, and Christopher Radko all have a Breast Cancer design.  Mark Roberts also has a "Pink" fairy for Breast Cancer Awareness month.

This month's winner of a $50 gift certificate is.....Jenny Solper. Congratulations!
