A Note from Dean Cavalieri

September has been a whirlwind month, capped off by a cross-country trip by many of our faculty and students for this year's OMED conference. We also had some exciting research news from Drs. Leone and Henry and an announcement that Dr. Caudle will be featured in a regular segment on the Dr. Oz Show. Please don't forget to roll up your sleeve for health this month by getting your annual flu vaccination!

My best,

Rowan Family Medicine Doctors Train Chinese Physicians

The Department of Family Medicine recently welcomed Drs. Zuxiang Cai, Dejun Wang and Suping Wang from Shenzhen, China, for a six-week training program focused on primary care and family medicine. The Chinese doctors will be working alongside Rowan Family Medicine faculty and staff in an effort to strengthen China's primary care workforce to meet the country's needs. The program, led by Dr. Joshua Coren, Associate Professor and Chair, Family Medicine, and Director, Continuing Medical Education (CME), is a continuing effort between RowanSOM, the International Primary Care Educational Alliance (IPCEA) and the Sichuan Provincial Health Bureau to educate Chinese physicians on the preventive care model and the role it plays in worldwide health care and disease prevention.

Pfizer Acquires a Rowan Portfolio Company for $150 Million

Dr. Paola Leone, professor and director of the Cell and Gene Therapy Center in the Department of Cell Biology, is the first Rowan University faculty member to have intellectual property commercialized by a major pharmaceutical company: Pfizer Inc. In July 2015, Rowan University entered into an asset transfer agreement with Bamboo Therapeutics, Inc., to commercialize a novel gene therapy developed by Leone and her team for the treatment of Canavan disease, one of the most common and complex degenerative cerebral diseases in infants. Recently, Pfizer acquired Bamboo Therapeutics, Inc. for $150 million. This agreement means that Dr. Leone's research may one day lead to Pfizer developing lifesaving therapies based on her research. Dr. Michael Henry Receives NIH Grant

Dr. Michael Henry, assistant professor, Molecular Biology, was recently awarded funding from the National Institutes of Health (NIH) for his research project, "Translational Control of Mitochondrial Gene Expression." The project will research the function of mitochondria at the cellular level, using a yeast model. Results from this study could help to identify underlying causes of mitochondrial disease, a devastating disorder affecting one in 4,000 children under the age of 10.
