A Message from the Dean...
Three Prayers for St. Matthew's Cathedral

In May 1856, a stocky, balding man came to town. He had been appointed the year before by the Provisional Bishop of Texas, George Washington Freeman, to serve as a missionary priest to the Germans in San Antonio, then a city of 7,000 souls. Those Germans would only worship in a church building, he wrote the Bishop. So, the bishop sent him northwest. He stopped in Waco, and could generate no interest. He wrote that they were excited only about "politics and no nothing ism." So, off he set to Corsicana, organized St. Bartholomew's parish there, but it burned in early 1856, so he moved on to Dallas, a town of about 500 souls.
Then, on Sunday, May 25th, 1856, Mr. Rottenstein, as he was called, held Divine Services "at eleven o'clock A.M. and half past four P.M." Services were held above a store on Main about where Dealey Plaza is now.
Here is one account: "A rail across the room created a chancel in which two dry goods boxes covered with orange calico . . . became the reading desk and altar. There is no record of how small the handful attending, but there is an indication a week later. The first communion . . . was partaken by Rottenstein, his wife, 'a Cumberland Presbyterian woman,' and an ex-minister of the Campbellite denomination." One of those in attendance was Judge Patterson, who for years would pay the assessment to the diocese personally. Patterson Street located downtown was named for him.
So begins St. Matthew's Parish.
160 years. 160 years of faithful ministry and presence in the city of Dallas.
Our beginning implanted three marks on St. Matthew's.

My prayer for St. Matthew's Cathedral is:
  • May we not forget that we are still called to be missionaries.
  • May we never lose that "make do, not wait till it's perfect" attitude.
  • May we always reach out to others who are not yet a part of us
