The fall music season is here! And the next few weeks bring Kent leading extraordinarily rich season-opening concerts of
Musica Sacra,
"Great Music in a Great Space" at the Cathedral of St. John the Divine, and the
Oratorio Society of New York.
On
October 5, Musica Sacra presents
"The Savior of Church Music and the Mystics," a program ranging from Palestrina's masterpiece
Missa Papae Marcelli to music of Arvo Pärt and Sir John Tavener, composers whose work refracts medieval style through a modern lens.
October 25 brings
"The Glory of Constantinople," the sixth collaboration of the Cathedral Choir of St. John the Divine with the wonderful early/world music group Rose of the Compass: chants and motets from Christian and Muslim traditions and modern-day arrangements of indigenous Turkish music. (You can purchase a recording of their last concert together, "Four Quarters of Jerusalem" - a rich program celebrating the diverse musical and religious cultures in that city - from the Pro Organo label
here.)
And on
November 3, Kent leads the Oratorio Society of New York at Carnegie Hall for a grand program of
Mozart's "Great" Mass in C Minor and Bruckner's Te Deum, with a terrific cast of soloists: Jennifer Zetlan, soprano; Helen Karloski, mezzo-soprano; Alex Richardson, tenor; and Philip Cutlip, baritone.
For fans in or near DeLand, Florida, and Savannah, Georgia: Kent performs organ recitals at Stetson University on
September 29 and at Savannah's St. Peter's Episcopal Church on
October 13.
See the links in the listings below to purchase tickets! For the complete season schedule, visit the
calendar page of Kent's website - and don't forget that services at the Cathedral of St. John the Divine are open to all: Choral Eucharist on Sundays at 11 AM, and Evensong on Sundays at 4 PM (
