Bike Rides for October 2016
October is a great time to ride bikes. The mornings are cooler and the afternoons don't get as hot. The leaves changing colors gives us a new scenic look We'll list the area ride first (for each weekend) followed by the out of area rides for those of you looking for a road trip or long weekend getaway.

With the weather proving hard to predict, make sure you pack layers. Things like jackets, arm warmers etc are a good thing to have. Cool mornings and/or rain showers can ruin a bike ride if you are caught in the wrong apparel. Ride on!
Bowie, TX - October 1

I like the fact that they start this ride at 9am. It gives us metro area riders more time to sleep and still get there in time to ride.

They offer a full menu of routes, with options of 10, 20, 40 and 60 miles. Lots of friendly volunteers assisting along the routes and cupcakes for everyone as they cross the finish line!

Glen Rose, TX - October 1

If you like hills, then this is THE ride for you. Featuring "The Wall" on their 53 and 60 mile routes, they also offer routes of 29 and 38 miles. The ride starts at 8:30am, so get on the road early or go on Friday and spend the night. There are lots of good food options in town!
McKinney, TX - October 8

The Wish 100, benefiting the Make-A-Wish Foundation of North Texas, rolls out from downtown McKinney at 8:00am. Riders have 4 route options: 16, 22, 46 or 65 miles. Registration is just $30 through October 7.

Waco, TX - October 8

The Waco Wild West has been around for years and is one of a handful of area rides that offers a 100 mile route (102 to be exact). They also have routes of 10, 27, 52 and 68 miles and an 8am start time. With Skittles as a sponsor, I hope they still have a rest stop at the Mars Candy Factory!

Mineral Wells, TX - October 15

My favorite small town attraction at this ride is the local Elvis Impersonator who puts on a show as we ride out at 9:00am. Lots of challenging hills on their routes of 22, 37, 50, 65 and 100 miles. This is not a flat ride, so be ready for plenty of hills. I'll be there riding with my friend Roby Christie from Wichita Falls and the HHH.

Baytown, TX - October 15 & 16

My friend Bob Appolito was talking about this 2 day ride yesterday. It has 3 hills - all bridges. The rest of the time you are riding flat roads with ocean and bay views, as well as a ferry boat ride. Looking for a new adventure?
Farmersville, TX - October 22

The friendly folks at the local Chamber of Commerce began organizing this ride several years ago. They make it better every year. Offering routes of 20, 30, 40, 50 and 62 miles, everybody can find something to ride. Ask about the North East Texas Trail while you are in town. Start time is 9:00am.

Bonham, TX - October 22

The Autumn in Bonham disappeared, but somebody knew that was not a good idea. Fortunately for the rest of us, they are bringing it back. Not sure how the first year will go, but I know that they are working hard to put together a good ride. Routes of 28, 59 and 73 miles all begin at 8:30am

Dallas, TX - October 29

Save The Date. We've got a NEW ride launching as part of the Trinity River Wind Festival offering a mountain bike/hybrid bike 10 mile route on the Trinity River Levee Trails and the Skyline Trails. A mixture of pavement and gravel, this is a casual ride designed as the perfect ride for friends and family to enjoy together. More details coming soon!
Well, that's what we've got for you to explore in October. I know that you can't ride in all of them, even if you want to. So, try something new or plan that road trip and explore new terrain and meet some new people.

The most important thing is to get out there and ride!
