In Memory of Angel ~
Regular readers of our newsletter may recall that we occasionally featured Angel, our bookstore "watchcat" of a dozen years.
Angel left us last month, at eighteen years old, a friend of the printed word.
Here she is with friends Bob Amundson and book dealer Peter Masi.

Under Angel's watchful eye, we never lost a book to a stray dog or a fugitive chipmunk! She will be missed.

I hope you can join me at Historic Seattle at the Seattle Public Library on 4th Avenue, Sunday, November 6 at 2 pm.  I will talk about what books can reveal about the building trades, architecture, and interior design. Fewsmith, Jr., this appears to be his collection of New England and Mid-Atlantic architectural photographs showing historic houses and buildings in Salem, Massachusetts, Philadelphia, West Point, the City College of New York, and Washington, D.C. The owner clearly had a keen eye and collected many striking details of entrances, windows, fireplaces, reading rooms, gardens, and more. As it includes scenes of the Folger Shakespeare Library in Washington, D.C. which was completed in 1932, we are dating this collection from shortly afterwards.  A one of kind portfolio of architectural images. This lovely book about European architecture was probably purchased in London by Isabel Howland and later donated to the Sherwood Free Library in New York, where she was born and raised. The niece of an abolitionist and suffragist, she also worked to advanced these causes and traveled in Europe with her aunt, Emily Howland. With its detailed renderings of the Bridge of Sighs, Alhambra, the Duomo, and other key destinations of the Grand Tour, this would have been an easy book to slip with her. (17880)   $125.00

This culminates in a portfolio of 20 designs, contemporary, colonial, ranch, and modern, by the architect, so famous in Massachusetts. His family still carries on his practice.
