An Information Forum This Sunday
This Sunday after worship we will have a congregational information forum in Common Grounds to discuss the Session's emerging plans for adaptations to our Sunday morning schedule and worship format here at St. Giles. An outline of our discussion is available at the church already. Look for the yellow sheets. Come and join in!
Suggesting Names For Elder Nominees
The Nominating Team will be meeting soon to prepare a list of nominees for consideration as Elders. Do you see people in our church who would make good leaders, and whose lives demonstrate the gospel? Please mention them to someone on the Nominating Team. It would help, too, if you were to add a note about why you think that person is particularly qualified.
Give your suggestions to any of the Team members: Robin Edwards, Larry Harrison, Annette Irving, Emily Masloff, or Larry Yancey. Please do not ask the person if he or she is willing to serve - that is the Nominating Team's job. Thanks, and let's be praying for God's chosen leaders to be called forth!

We've been talking about it, planning, and praying, and now it's underway: Explore God. Our seven week evangelistic outreach will continue through October 23. The most exciting part is that we are partnering with 293 Richmond churches, taking up the same topics each week, and joining in cooperative publicity, specifically seeking to connect with young adults - i.e., lots of social media and billboards.
Here are the remaining five topics we'll address in sermons and small groups:
- Why does God allow pain and suffering?
- Is Christianity too narrow?
- Is Jesus really God?
- Is the Bible reliable?
- Can I know God personally?
What's your part? Pray for those who don't know Jesus to meet him. And bring someone with you to a small group or worship! Whom might you invite?

A Note from the Family of Esten Shomo
The nieces and nephew of Esten Hollis Shomo wish to thank all of the clergy and congregation of St. Giles for the delivery of the beaufitul memorial service on Tuesday, September 6. The service gave comfort to our family listening to the words celebrating Esten's life on earth and blessing him to ethernal life in the heavens above.
We are sending a very special "Thank You" to the ladies of the church who prepared punch and all types of food goodies following the service. As a family we can all understand why Esten loved his church and congregation.
We appreciate the devotion shown to Estin during his years at the church and especially during his stay at Sun Rise. The only thing Esten did like about being at Sun Rise was seeing his church friends, neighbors and family.
May God bless you all.
Sincerely, Patricia F. Jennings, Hollis P. Spott, Lisa D. Forcke, Edmund W. Forcke, III.

An Invitation from John and Sharon Phelps
Wednesday, October 12 at 9 AM
Please join us in attending the Franklin Graham Decision America tour as it comes to Richmond on October 12, 2016 at noon at the State Capitol Portico off Bank Street. Franklin Graham is traveling to all 50 states in 2016 to hold prayer rallies, and to challenge believers to take a stand and take action. He will be urging Christians to vote, to live out their faith in every part of their lives, and to pray for our nation just as Nehemiah cried out to God to rebuild the walls of Jerusalem and restore hope to His people.
Climb on a comfortable bus supplied by James River Transportation, ride to the venue, join hundreds or perhaps thousands in PRAYER for America, and return to pickup
location. This will be a long day, with potentially a lot of standing, maybe some walking. If you like, bring a chair. Any questions, please contact
Sharon Phelps at john-sharon@cox.net or 804-932-3424.
Cost: $20 per seat.

This summer we studied individuals from Christian history who surrendered their lives to a higher purpose and made a significant impact on the world
around them. Our study was based on the books 7 Men and 7 Women by Eric Metaxas. It was so good, in fact, we want more. We'll be presenting two more biographies on the first two Wednesday nights of the season.

The Lord's Prayer
Taught by
Sarah Marsh Schutte
beginning September 28
Meets in Common Grounds
|
In the life of Jesus, prayer was the work and ministry was the prize. Having prayed, He went about ministry as an honor student might go to receive a reward, or as a marathon runner, having run the race, might accept the gold medal. Jesus' disciples watched Him and asked, "Lord, teach us to pray." In response He gave them The Lord's Prayer. The Lord's prayer covers everything we need to pray: God's person, program, purpose, provision, pardon, and protection. It is a blueprint for how to pray. Our study will include biblical, cultural, and historical background as well as theological reflection on this well-loved prayer which is central to our life as believers. Through practical application and interactive opportunities we trust the Lord will continue to "teach us to pray."

When God Doesn't Fix It: A Small Group Study for Women
Facilitated by Cindy Burgess
beginning September 28
Meets in the Upstairs Adult Classroom
|
Join a group of sisters in Christ for Laura Story's study, When God Doesn't Fix It: Lessons You Never Wanted to Learn, Truths You Can't Live Without. Is it possible that good things can come out of broken dreams? Worship leader and recording artist Laura Story's life took an unexpected turn when her husband, Martin, was diagnosed with a brain tumor. Their lives would never be the same. And yet in struggling with God about how to live with broken dreams, Laura has found joy and a deeper intimacy with Jesus. Laura helps us understand we aren't the only ones whose lives have
taken unexpected turns. She examines the brokenness of some of the heroes of our faith, and shows how despite their flaws and flawed stories, God was able to use them in extraordinary ways. And it was not because of their faith, but because of the faithfulness of their God. God may not fix everything. In fact, although your situation might not ever change or get better, with Jesus you can.
Time together includes a video lesson, discussion, and opportunity to pray for one another.
