Science Action Clubs - Activity Leader Training

Calling all Educators! You are invited to participate in
a Science Action Club Activity Leader workshop to bring citizen science to your middle-school youth!
Selected programs will receive in-depth training on Science Action Club activities, kits, and teaching techniques for the informal learning environment. Each curriculum guidebook includes step-by-step plans for 12 fun activities designed for one-hour club meetings. Teaching kits contain high-quality science equipment and classroom supplies for 20 youth along with digital resources that provide opportunities to extend learning.
Apply to receive training and materials for this 2-module curriculum in 2016-2017. Bugs in Your Schoolyard in the fall and Birds in Your Schoolyard in the spring. Each module has 12 activities that connect students to real-world research projects conducted by professional scientists.
The Bugs in Your Schoolyard Activity Leader Training will be held on October 19, 2016 at the Pacific Science Center.
Limited

Deadline: November 4, 2016
In WAS, students earn college credit by completing online curriculum that focuses on space travel. By completing the online program, students earn acceptance into a week-long Summer Residency at The Museum of Flight where they will work with professional mentors to plan a mission to Mars, tour engineering facilities, and compete in hands-on engineering challenges. Teachers are encouraged to apply as evaluators and summer residency facilitators.

The Lindbergh Electric Aircraft Flight (LEAF) STEM Challenge

The LEAF STEM Challenge is hosting their annual Fly-Off event in conjunction with the Museum's First Thursday Program. Students in grades 6-12 are invited to participate in this team activity. Each team will have a chance to fly the most cargo on their plane. Bring your team to collaborate and compete with teams from other schools and districts! The International Science Education Conference

Congressional App Challenge
July 18, 2016 - November 2, 2016
The Congressional App Challenge is a bipartisan congressional initiative to improve student engagement in coding and computer science. Particular efforts are made to engage those students from groups and regions that are underrepresented in the tech community. Students may create their apps on any platform, working alone or in teams of up to four. Winning apps are selected by local judges. Student winners will be honored by their Congressional representatives and have their apps put on display in the Capitol Building. Learn more at

Burke Museum - Girls in Science
The Middle School Girls in Science program provides a collaborative and supportive environment for girls in grades 6-8 to explore a variety of STEM fields such as oceanography, neuroscience, biology, and spectroscopy. Participants meet one Saturday each month to learn from female scientists at the Burke Museum and the University of Washington. Together, they conduct experiments with plants, learn to measure light, examine zooplankton under a microscope, and discover how the brain works (topics subject to change). Dates as follows (participants must attend all meetings): September 24, October 15, November 26, December 10, January 14, February 25, March 18, April 22, May 13. All meetings are 9:00 AM to 12:00 PM.
