Delta Fire Gears Up for Fire Prevention Month
October is Fire Prevention month. As fall approaches and the weather begins to change, so do our our ways of life. Vegetation begins to die off, outdoor activities turn to indoor
activities and the risk of home fires increase.

Delta Township and LCC Break Ground on New Fire Training Center
 Construction work began on the Fire Training Center located at the LCC West Campus on Tuesday, September 20. The new facility is a joint project between LCC and the Delta Township Fire Department that will help to train aspiring and seasoned fire professionals alike.
Construction will continue through October and is expected to be completed by October 28. The official grand opening of the facility will take place Wednesday, November 3 at 10:00 a.m.
"We are very excited about this new facility," said Delta Township Fire Chief John Clark. "It's an excellent opportunity for both LCC and Delta Fire to work together to provide top notch training for students and current fire personnel."
Supervisor Ken Fletcher added "We continue to find ways to partner with others to provide shared services that enhance service delivery and save taxpayer dollars. This training center will be an asset to the entire region."

Grand Woods Park Grand Re-Opening Event Set for October 9
Join Delta Township on Sunday, October 9 as we celebrate Grand Woods Park officially becoming part of the Delta Township parks system. Festivities will begin at 1:00 p.m. with a dedication ceremony. Individuals who have volunteered for the Parks & Recreation Department will also be recognized at this time. Then plan on staying in the park to enjoy refreshments, music, family games, and more.

Delta Township Upcoming Events
Show & Tell Nature Walk
Join us for a series of participatory nature walks as we explore the plants and wildlife in Delta Township parks. The walks will have a leader but we invite all walkers to be active participants and share their knowledge. Please wear good walking shoes and bring water. Walks will start promptly at the scheduled time and will last approximately one hour. Walks are suitable for the entire family and children will be given a nature log to record their findings.

 Trick-or-Treat Trail
Come walk the "spooky" path around the pond at Sharp Park and experience it like you never have before. Join the Delta Township Parks Department for their annual Trick-or-Treat Trail on Tuesday, October 11 from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. Participants will be able to "trick or treat" at business and organization sponsored displays while candy supplies last. We encourage everyone to wear costumes. Admission to this event is just $1 per child. Please bring your own trick-or-treat bags for this event.

A Capital City Ambassador
Delta Township Supervisor Ken Fletcher along with Lansing Township Supervisor Diontrae Hayes were out filming a welcome video for the Michigan Township Association's (MTA) Annual Conference.
The MTA will host the 2017 Annual MTA Conference in the Capital city for the first time in over a decade and has asked Delta Township, along with other capital region municipalities, to act as ambassadors for the event. |
Delta Township EDC Offers New Facade Improvement Program for Delta Businesses
Businesses along the east end of the Saginaw corridor
(Waverly to Elmwood)
will now have an opportunity to apply for some financial assistance from a facade improvement program offered and funded by the Delta Township Economic Development Corporation.
This program is part of an effort by the Township
's EDC
to improve the aesthetics of building fronts along areas of the Saginaw corridor that have aged and/or fallen into disrepair
and encourage improvements
.

has been a goal of the Township Board to find ways to improve the Saginaw corridor and the entrance to the Township, and this can be one of the tools that is utilized to do that."

BWL: Trace Amounts of Chromium Far Below EPAs Allowable Amount
 It has been reported by the Lansing State Journal that water in the Lansing area contains trace amounts of Hexavalent Chromium, also known as Chromium 6 or Cr(VI), and the chemical most associated with famed environmentalist Erin Brockovich.
The most common forms of chromium that occur in natural waters in the environment are Cr(VI) and CR(III). When chromium levels are assessed, water treatment centers are testing for total chromium, a combination of Cr(VI) and Cr(III). Both types of chromium can leach into water naturally, but Cr(VI) can also result from industrial runoff. The average level of Cr(VI) detected in the Lansing Board of Water & Light's (BWL) water supply is in trace amounts, on average 500 times less than the Environmental Protection Agency's (EPA) allowable limit of 100 parts per billion (ppb) for total chromium (Cr(III) and Cr (VI)). Through the Unregulated Contaminant Monitoring Rule (UCMR), once every five years the EPA issues a new list of contaminants for utilities to analyze to assist with future regulations to protect public health. Cr(VI) was part of this selected group and the EPA will use information gathered from sampling across the country to study and determine potential health impacts.
The average Cr(VI) detected in BWL water was 0.2 ppb and in Delta Township was 0.23 ppb. In perspective, 1 ppb is the equivalent to 1 drop of water in an Olympic size swimming pool and BWL's average was just 20% of that amount. Monthly, the BWL monitors for total chromium in its water conditioning plant samples, the same water source that flows to Delta Township residents, and the results have always been lower than the BWL's own reporting limit of 1 ppb. The BWL will continue to monitor the water supply and will take necessary action if regulations are set by state or federal agencies. The BWL drinking water continues to meet or exceed all quality standards issued by the state and the federal agencies and have zero violations. California has been the first state to set stricter limits on Cr(VI), and that level has been set at maximum contaminant level of 10 parts per billion.

The Delta Township Community Awards Committee is seeking nominations in each of the following four categories:
The Citizen of the Year Award will honor selected individual citizens whose extraordinary contributions go "above and beyond" to enhance the quality of life and general reputation of the township.
The Young Person of the Year Award is limited to high school seniors (whether traditional high school or home-schooled) who have made a positive contribution to the community, is an example to their friends, may have excelled in academics, music, arts, athletics, etc., or has successfully faced personal challenges. A $2,000 scholarship, sponsored by the Delta Side Business Association, will be awarded to the selected individual.
The Community Organization of the Year Award will honor selected groups or organizations for their dedication in serving and promoting Delta Township through volunteer contributions that has impacted the quality of life in Delta Township, provided leadership over a period of years, thereby contributing to the township's character, and/or made a valuable contribution that has enhanced the quality of life for residents of Delta Township.
The Business of the Year Award will honor selected Delta Township businesses or business persons who have been responsible for exceptional outcomes between and among businesses, governments, and nonprofit organizations; OR, have served as a role model for other business; OR, have gone above and beyond the scope of business to support and promote Delta Township. The goal is to promote shared community interests and encourage business harmony within the township and among entities of the Greater Lansing Region.

1) The Delta Mills Park Pickleball Courts are complete and ready for play. A grand opening ceremony will be held in the spring of 2017.
2) Michigan Pipe & Valve at 1931 Snow Road has been purchased, and will now be identified as Ferguson Waterworks.
3) Representatives of Kroger have indicated that they intend to initiate a Quik-Pik grocery system permitting customers to order on-line and pick up their groceries at designated parking spaces near the southwest corner of the building.
4) The Comfort Inn at 525 N. Canal Road plans a complete renovation of their property which will include upgrades for all of the guest rooms commencing in November of this year.
5) Lots of activity has occurred over the past month at 4820 W. Saginaw, which is just east of the Carrier Creek. A single family home has been demolished, trees removed, a bank excavated and fill dirt hauled in. Additionally, a retaining wall has been constructed and construction of a new daycare facility is planned for the property.
