Levee District Director Advocates Flood Map and Insurance Reform in D.C.
NLLD Executive Director Dwayne Bourgeois continued his push for much-needed changes to the National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP) during meetings on Capitol Hill last week. Bourgeois has long been a champion for Lafourche, the state and the nation when it comes to protecting residents from unreasonable increases to flood insurance rates and flood maps that don't reflect protection provided by local levee projects.
While in Washington, D.C., he attended a U.S. Senate Banking Committee hearing on the NFIP and its Technical Mapping Committee's 2015 report to Congress and FEMA. Bourgeois was a subject matter expert for the mapping committee.
He met with U.S. Senator David Vitter and U.S. Congressman Garret Graves on NFIP reform, as the program is up for reauthorization in 2017 and flood insurance reform has become a critical issue.
Bourgeois also participated in meetings of the Mississippi Valley Flood Control Association (MVFCA), in which he represents the Association of Levee Boards of Louisiana on the MVFCA's Executive Committee. The MVFCA promotes flood control, drainage and navigation improvements from Minneapolis/St. Paul to the Gulf.

Clearing Storm Debris
|
The NLLD's Volvo/WECO marsh buggy went to work along Boudreaux Canal in the Sugar Ridge area in August to clear trees that had fallen during severe storms, crossing the previously cleared right of ways along the canal.

Lafourche Levee Projects Have Support of Morganza Action Coalition
The Morganza Action Coalition (MAC) has expanded its grassroots advocacy work to include promoting flood protection in North Lafourche and all of Lafourche Parish.
The move, the coalition said, provides the entire region with a stronger voice for levee projects to protect the coastal communities. NLLD Chairman of the Board of Commissioners Cory Kief, other Lafourche residents, and a representative of the South Lafourche Levee District are now included on the coalition's board.
Now, that it has expanded to Lafourche, the group will focus its efforts on more than just the Morganza to the Gulf Hurricane Protection Project but all levee work in the two parishes.
NLLD works daily to protect our people, our property and our way of life in Lafourche Parish!
