Vitamin D and the B Vitamins ...
What Do They Have To Do With Sleep?
|
Dr. Stasha Gominak will answer this question at our October 2016 Step Up Continuum!
Meet Dr. Stasha Gominak!
She is a board certified neurologist and believes many neurologic diseases can be treated or improved by allowing the patient to stay in deep sleep longer. She also is investigating if patients who have abnormal sleep also have vitamin D deficiency.
"Most people who have a neurologic problem such as headache, tremor, balance difficulties, vertigo, burning in the feet, depression, body pain, stroke, or memory loss also have abnormal sleep. Surprisingly, fixing the sleep can often fix the neurologic problem.
In 2005 one of my patients with daily headache found that she had sleep apnea. Her headaches went away after a few weeks of using a sleep apnea mask. I then started to perform sleep studies on all of my headache patients. They all had abnormal sleep studies. After realizing that many of my patients had sleep complaints I began to do sleep studies on most of my patients. The majority of them had abnormal sleep studies, sometimes without realizing that their sleep was abnormal.
...The disease in the background, the reason why the brain is not sleeping properly, needs to be fixed. I accidentally discovered that all of the patients with abnormal sleep had vitamin D deficiency, and it turns out that vitamin D is not their only deficiency. Everyone with abnormal sleep has a combination of both vitamin D and B vitamin deficiencies."
Note: This excerpt from Dr. Gominak's website is not meant to be a summary of current science. It is a summary of her thoughts on how Vitamin D works based on her patient observations as well as current science.

Limited data from commercial drivers is a major reason for the US Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration's failure to require screening for obstructive sleep apnea (OSA). We present the results of the first large-scale, employer program to screen, diagnose, and monitor OSA treatment adherence in the US trucking industry. Among drivers in whom OSA was diagnosed through the program, those adherent with employer-provided positive airway pressure treatment had crash risks similar to controls. Nonadherent drivers had...

The implications of untreated sleep apnea and even very mild inspiratory airflow limitation during sleep are of public health concern! In the United States the estimated economic cost of undiagnosed sleep apnea was nearly $150 billion in 2015. Yes, that is billion with a "B"!

What can YOU do?
The goal of the medical professions is to enable conditions for healing. Dentistry has traditionally been focused on the "fix." Today, we must move from "diagnose and treat" to "predict and preempt".
Thousands of dentists are missing an ideal opportunity to help their patients sleep better and live fuller, healthier lives, while adding an ideal revenue stream to their practices.
