Educators Participate in STEM Active Learning Workshop

Active Learning Communities 9.19.16 One of the STEM Active Learning Toolbox Professional Development Workshops was held this month at the Kirkwood Regional Center at the University of Iowa! These workshops use hands-on trainings to give STEM facilitators the opportunity to transform a STEM lesson with the Harvard-based "Dimensions of Success" Program Planning Tool.

This workshop, which was held on September 19, included participants from out-of-school STEM programs, informal education settings, and traditional classrooms.

The workshop was facilitated by the STEM Active Learning Community Partners, which is a committee of the Iowa Governor's STEM Advisory Council focused on expanding and enhancing STEM active learning in informal environments. The goal of this committee's efforts is to increase student achievement and interest in STEM fields.

Iowa Girls Code Hosts Fall Kick-Off Event

This year's Iowa Girls Code Fall Kick-Off was held on Saturday, September 24 at the Kirkwood Regional Center at the University of Iowa!

Iowa Girls Code is a program for high school girls to explore careers in computer science and learn about app and website development. The event pairs teams of 5-10 girls with mentors from partner companies, which include Rockwell Collins, Microsoft, Iowa State University, Workiva, Newbo Co., VSI, and Maverick Software Consulting.

The Fall Kick-Off event featured a talk from Chris Cournoyer, a female computer science degree holder and a member of the SE STEM Advisory Board! She discussed her work with Virtual Reality at Victory Enterprises and as the President of The Quad City Engineering and Science Council.

Cournoyer shared her experiences as the "only female in a class of 54 students" when she graduated with her Computer Science degree. She also discussed the importance of a STEM degree, explaining that "people in STEM are problem-solvers."

The Fall Kick-Off program also featured a coding workshop on front end web development, a TECH learning workshop, a Virtual Reality demo, an introduction to basic programming, and a talk from Saqi Mehta, who is a recruiter at Square.

After the Fall Kick-Off event, the teams will design and implement a project that introduces them to coding and other computer science skills; teams then present their projects at the Spring Summit event for the chance to win prizes.
