October is National Disability Employment Awareness Month

People with disabilities are an important part of the nation's workforce, and that's much of the reason why the U.S. Department of Labor declares October as National Disability Employment Awareness Month.

This year's theme is Inclusion Works - for Opportunity, for Business and For Innovation.

The annual designation traces its roots all the way back to 1945, when Congress declared the first week in October as "National Employ the Physically handicapped Week."

Major eRecycling event at RW Solid Waste Campus

The City of Red Wing and ProAct eRecycling Services are partnering to hold an electronics recycling collection event for all residents and businesses in southeastern Minnesota and western Wisconsin. It all happens during the city's Annual Electronics Recycling Event on Saturday, October 15 from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Red Wing Waste Campus at 1873 Bench Street in Red Wing.

"This is a chance for people to get rid of their unused electronics, most of them for free," said ProAct eRecycling Services Manager Tim Hovey.  "And, there are reduced rates for televisions and computer CRT monitors."  The primary goals are to recover, reuse and recycle unneeded electronic and electrical products to keep them out of the waste stream, and to provide jobs for people with disabilities.

Participants prep sweet surprise for Red Wing PD

ProAct individuals and staff members from the Day Training and Habilitation program in Red Wing arrived downtown with a sweet surprise for Red Wing Police officers and Goodhue County Sheriff's deputies.

In hand were "survival kits," with a fun candy theme to remind the cops about their important, and sometimes difficult work.  Participants offered their thanks to the keepers of the peace in a letter, and police obliged by giving them a tour of the department.  Training Officer Scott Kochendorfer said ProAct was welcome for more tours and thanked the group for the survival kits.

Not to be left out, ProAct did the same for officers in Kenyon and Wanamingo.
And who are the Employer winners?
ProAct recognizes several employers each year for the important roles they play in utilizing people with disabilities to accomplish work.  Four companies are set to be honored at the Eagan Recognition Banquet and one at Red Wing's annual event.  More information to come!
